General Discussion / Re: New member - probably old problem!
Hello Antony

Welcome

You can shift a note to the right so that it does not collide when layering.  Highlight the note you want to shift. Then hold down alt and press enter to get to the note properties.

On the dialog box presented, click on the notes tab and you will see on the second line down,  Extra note spacing. type 1 in the box (or use the arrow key).

Not sure what you mean by the next bit but if you mean (for example) inserting forte or piano symbols, then, without anything else highlighted, press the D key. Select the dynamic tab, and there is a drop down menu to select the dynamic you want.

If you mean cresc. and Decresc, then hit the Y key.
If you mean hairpins, then this is available in version 2 by highlighting the affected notes and then pressing either < or > for cresc hairpin or Decresc hairpin.

If that's not what you were asking, can you be more specific.

Hope this helps

General Discussion / Re: Beta 2.08: Note spacing bug
And what makes it absolutely clear is if you set up Rick's clip and then highlight the quarter note example, then hold down shift and toggle arrow up and arrow down, you will see the remaining notes not move an iota - but try that with the eighth duration and watch.

There would appear (to me), to be no reason for this behaviour since the flag of an eighth note when in a chord involving a semitone gap falls inside the space taken by the note head no matter which dirction the flag is pointing.

(long way of saying agreed !)

General Discussion / Re: I'm new
Normally speaking, I would not reply to a submission until I post it on the Scriptorium.

However in your case, I have replied to you - and I thought that you may not be a good english speaker before I connected your email address with your name here - so I apologise at my attempts to translate my answer into Finnish.  You quite obviously do not need that.

Perhaps you will look at my email and (hopefully), agree to what I'm asking.

It will take a few days to see your work posted there as that work is done as a labor-of-love by Rich the Scriptoman, who does a wonderful job and who we thank for his efforts and service.

Why thank you kind Sir !
As a rule updates happen on Friday evenings (UK time) - but if not, sometime over the weekend.

Please also note that Work In Progress would not be considered for the Scriptorium and neither would work last saved by an unregistered user.

General Discussion / Re: Transposing Horn in F to Alto Saxophone
You would have a laugh if you saw me at work with two bits of paper and several highlighters representing your ladders. LOL.

This it explains it well until everyone starts asking what on earth I'm doing and I really can't justify the time to explain how bits of coloured paper, ladders and transposing instruments relate to the bit of software I'm supposed to be working on.

Have to wait until I get home I guess. I suppose my wife will ask why I'm painting the rungs :)

Thanks David - I like the analogy.

General Discussion / Re: first song
I think that since you are posting to a NoteWorthy forum, you sould seriously think about posting a link to a NoteWorthy file rather than a midi file.

Can't get this midi to play - don't know why and haven't got the time just at the moment to investigate ( Just re-installed my system recently and this is the first midi I've tried to play).

General Discussion / Re: bak files.
Ahhh - no gremlin, you just need to do what I said in an earlier post

That is ....

From where you see your files - Click tools
Click Folder Options
Click the View Tab
Look for the entry that says "Hide extentions for known file types" and click the box to the left so that there is nothing in it.
Click apply to all folders
Click Yes to the message that is displayed
Then click Ok

Now.

Close down "My Computer" and then re-open.
When you now follow the instructions given before, you will now find that you can see the .bak extention, delete it and replace it by .nwc

Here's hoping

General Discussion / Re: bak files.
Tony,

You're nearly there. "Windows Explorer" is "My computer" - so that's ok. (If you right click My computer you will see an explore option so many people call it windows explorer).
Wher you say "on the BAK file the name highlights".  At that point, after th name has highlighted, press F2.

What you will see is that the highlight is still  there, but it will now bi in a box. Press the right arrow key. Tis will gt rid of the highlight but you will be still in the box, with the cursor at the end of the letters BAK
Press backspace 3 times to get rid of bak and then type    NWC

Now press the enter key and you will now have a file with an nwc extention which when you double click, will load into NoteWorthy.

Note that when you press enter above, if you already have a file of the same name with .nwc extention, then you will get an error message.

Otherwise, all should be ok.

Hope this helps.

And to follow up on David's post - some people may not see file extensions. Most people will know how to deal with this, but just in case ...  Click Tools,   Folder Options then slect the view tab.  A little way down you will see  "Hide Extensions for known file types".  Remove the check box flag and either click "Apply to all folders" or click OK if just wanted for the current folder.

Tips & Tricks / Re: Adjusting page layout - shortening bars.
Steve,

You should note that importing mxml into NoteWorthy is not default functionality (yet), but has been provided through a third party utility provided by Nicolas Hatier.

Having said that, it works very well. There are a few issues around the Grand Staff, but this is because of the way sharpeye converts it.

It's certainly far superior to a midi import.

General Discussion / Re: Local and master repeat / special endings
Quote
Only in a 'local repeat close', you can specify how many repeats are needed
Yes - local repeats are just that - specify how many times you want tat passage played - no variance.

Quote
Only in a 'master repeat close', special endings are taken into account
That's right - they have no meaning for a master repeat

Quote
What if I want three iterations, each with a different ending ?

Then you have to use a master repeat.
Put special ending 1 where the first ending starts, then complete it with a master repeat close.
Immediately after that, put special ending 2 and complete that ending with a master repeat close.
Immediately after that put special ending 3 - this one doesn't need a master repeat ending.

Quote
More general :How can one use the 3th until 7th special endings that are possible to mark?

When you hit the s Key, a dialogue box appears. Here you can select which endings should play the following measures.
So you could have the first one that is marked with endings 1,3,5 and th second one marked with 2,4,6 for example.

The one that says default / DS/DC ending will be the one used if you dont specify an ending or if you have already passed a DS or DC instruction.

General Discussion / Re: Complete file for Beta 2.06
You won't need to.

Eric has developed a system that lets you download an update that brings whatever you've got installed up to date in one download.

So all you will need to do is sign up for the beta again and then, once installed, use the Help "Access NoteWorthy.com" entry to bring the system up to date with one download. (Speaking as someone who's just been through that and will now have to do it all again - Friday 13th struck !!!)

General Discussion / Re: Midi Channels
You should not put all strings on one channel. You may be able to get away with 1st and 2nd vilolinson one channel but there will be problems with this even.

Every instruction that applies to the channel will be given to every staff that uses that channel.

Try this experiment.

New file - set up a staff to play a piano line - say note, rest, note , rest
Set up a second staff to play trumpet - rest, note , rest, note
Set both staves to channel 1

Go to the first staff and press shift f5 (play current staff)
You will hear the piano
Go to the second staff and press shift f5
You will hear the trumpet
Press f5 to play everything . What do you hear - just the trumpet.
This is because the instuction for instrument trumpet comes after the instruction for instrument piano and so both channel one staves take on instrument trumpet.

This is why you shouldn't have differing instruments on one channel.

Even with 1st and 2nd violins on one channel, you will get problems with dynamics and so on.

General Discussion / Re: Too many staves
If your are using Soundblaster then (I think) that you should be able to set things up for 32 channels.

Go to tools  options midi  and look at the available play devices.  (You will probably already have one in the Devices used by play back box)
In the available play devices box, you should see others that are avalable to you. My guess is that you will at least have something Soundblasterish and also possible something that says Microsoft GS Wave table. Make sure both of these are in the right hand box, and that when you click ok, you don't get a message saying that one of them failed to open properly.

Having done that, go to the properties for the staff, In the midi tab, you can now set up channels 1 to 16 on 16 staves using playback device (Soundblasterish something or other) and then set up a further 16 staves to use channels 17 to 32 on playback device  Microsoft GS Wave table.

I would set up the worst playback device for those staves that either do not have that much music OR for those where the playback sound is poor whatever device you use.

One word of warning.

Sending your NWC file to other people will give them problems generally because they may only have one play back device and therefore the staves that have channels from 17 to 32 will not sound on their system

(I think I've got this right)

General Discussion / Re: Lost in Beta 2.05?
I may be mistaken, but I believe that the answer to the problem that Brian raised is nothing to do with the forthcoming answers.

I think that Brian has changed one of his settings. (Perhaps accidentally).  Go to Tools / Options / Editor and see if there is a check mark against Smart Properties Insert. If there is - remove it.

With it removed  - you get more in the dialog boxes when you insert (for example - pressing e gives you 3 dialog tabs in the box) . With it selected, you only get one and the program inserts according to where the last item was placed.

General Discussion / Re: My biggest bugbear with Noteworthy Composer!
Well I have a keyboard macro program that when I hit CTRL O puts a note at the current pitch, goes down an octave and inserts an octave chord note - So I guess that must mean that I agree that it would be useful to have since I have configured my system to do it.

What I would say though (in case you don't know) is that the easiest way of doing this is to hit enter, hold down control and then hit down arrow followed by enter (without letting go of the control key). This then forms the octave chord you are looking for quite easily. Quite a simple key operation. Obviously, you can also do it bottom up by using the up arrow rather than the down arrow.

General Discussion / Re: Hopefully one of oir virtuosos can explain this
Keith,

What you have to do when you use chords on a staff is to treat each chord as a unit and count that unit. do not think of it as stem up counts and stem down counts - as you suspect - that does not always work.

In your example, using stem up countng and stem down counting, stem up gets you 4 beats, stem down gets you 4 beats - seems ok. But - you need to use unit counting (the smallest value for each unit).  In the first group (unit) the smallest timing is two beats, the second unit has two beats and the last unit has one beat - a total of 5 beats -  no good for a 4 beat measure.

What you need to do is to correct this so that all of the units add up to the time sig. In this case, you need to make the quarter note play only 1 beat after the single half note note sounds. So you need to make the half note add up to one beat rather than the two beats it naturally does.  To do this, you need to make it a chord with a rest such that the lowest unit value is 1 beat.

Like this :

Code: [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.0,Single)
|Bar
|Chord|Dur:Half|Pos:-1|Opts:Stem=Down|Dur2:Half,Dotted|Pos2:0
|RestChord|Dur:4th|Opts:Stem=Up,ArticulationsOnStem|Dur2:Half|Pos2:#-2
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:1|Opts:Stem=Up
|Bar
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End

In music publishing, this is not displayed like this and so might not end up as you would like to see it.

The other way of balencing chorded measures without doing this is to use layering.
If you have all stem up measures in one layer and stem down measures in a second layer, then you won't need to do all this, but you may need to adjust the horizontal position of a note slightly when the notes are in close proximity (pitch wise)

So in your case
Put all the stem up notes in one staff
Put the stem down notes in a second staff
Put your cursor on the first staff. Go to the properties of the staff , the visual tab (ALT and Enter, then select the visual tab)
Check the "Layer with next staff" box.
You will see that the lower staff now overlays the upper one. (If it doesn't check the view menu to check that you have "Allow layering" selected)
But you will have clashing notes (A/B chord assuming treble clef)
Go to the view menu and uncheck "Allow layering" (quickest way to unlayer)
Highlight the A in the second staff and go to the properties for that note.
Enter 1 in the Extra note spacng box - click ok
Go to the view menu and check "View Layering"
This should now look as you would expect it to.

Tips & Tricks / Display staff for two note tremolos using layering.
Most of us are used to using a hidden staff as a sounding staff with with a display staff to attempt the more tricky visual note interpretations. Two note tremolos are one example of this. However, in this case, the display staff is usually littered with chorded rests which look ugly and detracts from the music. This is because in order to get the visual interpretation of a tremolo, the individual notes have to be half their time value in order to display both notes of the tremolo and fit in the time signature of the measure. The only way that the note can have half the time value is to form a chord with a rest half the value of the note. Unfortunately, the rest cannot be made invisible.

Some users use post processing and "white out" the rests.  This is fine when there are not too many tremolos but a pain if there are quite a few.  In addition, it would be so much easier if the rest could be moved below the lines of the staff for easy "whiting out". This can be done if the vertical position of the rest is adjusted before making the chord up but it is a trial and error process, never knowing exactly where the rest will end up.

Here is a solution that does away with the rests but uses layering instead. The music looks much better, not perfect, just better.

The trick is to use layering. On the top layer is the left hand note. On the bottom layer is the right hand note. At first this would be directly over the top note, but you must add extra note spacing to this right hand note. Add the maximum allowed (3). This just about gives enough space to add the tremolo sign using Lawrie's SwingDings.

In addition, where the right hand note needs an accidental, you will need to insert a text version.  This is because a real accidental on the note will be offset by three spaces to the left. Accidentals on the left hand note will not need to be treated in this way.

This workaround can be used in both versions 1.75 and 2.

The example attached (version 1.75) needs SwingDings which is loaded into the user 1 font and NWC2MusikDingsSans loaded into user 2 font .  (There is nothing to say that this font cannot be used in version 1.75 !)

In the example, you will see the top staff showing what tremolos look like using the chorded rest method.
The next two staffs (layered) show this work around.
For completeness, there is a hidden sounding staff.
When played, the tremolos in the chorded version go red separately whilst those of this work around play together (a small point I know).

This method does not overcome problems such as beamed flags for eighth note (and greater) tremolos but it is a step closer until we have a tremolo function natively within NWC.

General Discussion / Re: Scanning music.
And to take Rob's 'definite maybe' a bit further.

Sharpeye can save as a music xml file. You can then use Nicolas Hatiers program mxml2nwc to convert the music xml into nwc2.

Works very well.  Need some special considerations for the grand staff, but unlike loading midi into nwc, with this method, items such as hairpins, slurs etc and triplets are imported properly !

At the end of the day, you might need to force a stem direction to get a desired beam angle.

Did you mean to say that ?
Either way, forcing a change to the stem length on one of the end notes will force a slope and modification of the length will get a desired angle with the stem direction in the way that you want it.

General Discussion / Re: NoteWorthy Composer 2 Beta 2.03 Now Available
Thanks Eric (I think)

I was one of the users not getting to grips with the font changes and I hope this has fixed my problems with it.

However - I can't test for the moment since my machine is under repair and I don't even have NWC 1.75 installed on this borrowed machine, never mind version 2.

Looking forward to being able to test eventually !

General Discussion / Re: NWC2 Beta 2: Customizing the Notation Font Typeface
Well part of the problem seems to be that the new default is now 11, whereas it used to be 16.
Setting the print size to 16 (consistent with staff size in points ?) then seems to give the sorts of sizes I would expect for the lyric font.

However, changing the staff size in points before, never used to change the appearance of the lyric font in the editor.
Only in Print preview - and then everything was proportionately changed, not just the lyric font.

I think I will leave this for a while and let a few others play with this functionality to see what they think. Perhaps it's just me.

General Discussion / Re: NWC2 Beta 2: Customizing the Notation Font Typeface
Well, perhaps,

But I'm sorry - I still can't get it.
If I go to fonts - and without changing anything else, I select Comic Sans MS for Lyric and I select size 10 (which is a common size (10 or 12 is quite common), then the font comes out as if it were somewhere between 20 - 30.

Are you now saying, that without changing anything else, we can no longer select standard sizes from the font dialogue box ?
To get something normal, you need to select something like 5 or 6 which isn't even in the drop down menu.

I think I need a bit more explaination. ALT z worked great  - but this seems very odd to me .
