I have recently been forced to buy a new portable, this has Vista as an operating system. (no comment !!!!)
On my old XP portable, it had pcmcia card slot in which I could use a Soundblaster pcmcia Audigy card (Audigy 2 ZS Notebook) which supported sound fonts.
My new machine has Express card slot. Soundblaster now make an Express card sound card (X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook)and you would think, wouldn't you, that this would also support sound fonts. But it doesn't.
After several emails to Soundblaster, I discovered that not even their external USB soundcards support soundfonts under Vista. They would not say if there were plans to make a soundcard for Vista portables that supports soundfonts.
I next tried synthfont with midiyoke as the device that fed the output from NoteWorthy to Synthfont. The reproduction was terrible. Don't go there.
I next tried Garritan Personal Orchestra - Version 2. This worked brilliantly although it is not as easy to manipulate as a soundblaster soundcard with sound fonts. Garritan Personal Orchestra uses Northern Instruments Kontact Player version 1 to play the sound samples. In addition, you need to use some software called Garritan Studio to link NoteWorthy Composer to Garritan Personal Orchestra. The sound reproduction is very good. So I thought I would go ahead and purchase Garriatan Personal Orchestra ............
They have upgraded to Version 3. This uses Northern Instruments Kontact Player version 2 to play the samples and guess what ! Garritan studio cannot use Kontact Player version 2. So the connection between NoteWorthy and Garritan Personal Orchestra version 3 cannot be made.
An email was sent to to Garritan to enquire if, after purchasing Garritan Personal Orchestra version 3, you could then download Kontact player version 1 and thereby be able to use it with NoteWorthy Composer. They replied that Northern Instruments would not permit this.
However, they did say quote "this fall we'll be coming out with a new version that most likely will interface with Noteworthy." end quote. I'm not sure what to make of the "most likely" but there it is.
So I thought that I would relay all of this so that anyone else trying to get decent sound reproduction using a Vista portable will at least know the steps I have tried and the potential of a future version of GPO.
Now if NoteWorthy and VST .......... but that's another story.
Hi and Welcome. What you need to do is first of all, go to the midi set up in NoteWorthy. (Tools / Options / Midi). From there, make sure that your sound card that supports sound fonts is selected in the right hand window, and not the midi mapper or the Standard GS wavetable.
Having done that, Go to the properties for each staff (Without anything selected on the staff, press F2. Select the instrument tab.
For that particular staff, choose which soundfont you want it to use (the one in bank 10 or the one in bank 11). You will see a Bank Select box. Make sure it is ticked. Change the controller 0 value to either 10 or 11 as appropriate. Do not change the controller 32 value
Noteworthy will now play using the sound font in your sound bank. What you now have to so is to select the instrument patch according to the sound font. So it could be that the font has patch 6 has the organ pipe bourdon 16. So you would need to select "Chorused Piano" (General midi 6) to play this.

Don't know if it's conencted or not, but I have recently purchased a laptop with Vista. The laptop did not have SP1 and so I downloaded and installed. This partially knocked out some fuctionality supplied by the sound drivers. I had to re-install all of the sound drivers supplied before I was able to do the same things as before.
I would recommend that you try this, but you may as well, at the same time, look to see if there are any updated drivers and install those.
Are you saying that you want both of them to be over the note?
If so, edit the properties of each of the two text items (the turn symbol and also the sharp symbol). One of the options will let you place the text item "at the next bar / note" rather than best fit. As long as you have both of these items before the note wanted, then both of them will appear directly over the note and you will only have to amend the vertical positioning.
Ahh - Fermatas do not export to midi. You need to reflect them in some other way such as putting in an extra bar with the appropriate changes. This is not an nwc problem - but a midi structure problem.
As far as the note chaneg is concerned, are you sure that you changed the note on a non muted staff ?
If you have a muted and a non muted one, the changes wouldn't be reflected if you only did it to the muted staff.

If I'm reading your requirement correctly (which I perhaps am not), on the special ending that has the chorus in (the special ending 1), you need to also have the special ending "D" default.then that is the special ending that will play after the flow direction has been executed.

It would depend on your card. For mine, you would load the software called "Soundfont bank manager" Click on Bank On the left hand panel will be the banks that you can load a font into. Select one. Click on load. You will then be presented with a navigation dialog box. Navigate and select the sound font you want. Click open. It will be then loaded into the bank you selected.
None of which will be of use to you unless you have the same card range as I do. The thing is when you buy a card, the instructions to load a sound font will come with it.
I think it all depends on what you want to achieve.
You could have one staff with 4 notes shown both verses - but mute that staff and have a hidden staff that plays each verse separately. (Because it's hidden, you do not have to put the repeat in). You can then have 4 notes played the for the first verse and 6 notes played for the second verse.
I think I would be tempted to use this - but on the muted visual staff, I would put the 4 notes stem up, but at the two places where there have to be additional notes, make them a chord with a stem down and another stem down. you could even put a text bracket around each of the second notes to indicate a variation.
If I had access to nwc at the moment, I'd do a demo for you - but post back here if you need to see what I mean and I'll do an example when I get home tonight.
You could of course buy a sound card that does support sound fonts. There are two main types. Those that plug into the spare slots at the back of your machine. (Be careful what slots you have available - half size or full size).
Alternatively you can buy sound cards that will plug into your USB port. Not as permanant perhaps, and you may need to have external speakers / earphones to get the sound out of these. The biggest advantage here is that they work with a laptop and they do not require you to open your machine.
I don't believe there is any way to do what you want to do. NWC allocates the space as if you were going to use the lyrics you have configured throughout the song.
Perhaps, if you're trying to get a decent print of the song, you could use post processing using DTP. If a copy of the complete song will not print properly to effectively used DTP in one hit then you may want to try splitting the song into two files, the verses in one file (using the appropriate staff ending selection) and then the refrain in the second song with only one lyric line configured.

Ditto - I think that bit of info would be much more valuable than the %age of the staff used and would willingly forgoe that. I don't recall ever being near that (except when I tried just to see what happens).
There of course is the work around - Ctrl G, which immediately tells you where you are, followed by ESC - but a visual marker that is always available would be much better.

For those of you that have been asking about the old vpmag site, I still have not heard from anyone - and it is certainly not up at the moment - disappeared !
And this certainly points out the validity of the programmer's eleventh commandment: Thou shalt make backups. Richard, thanks for having had the foresight to do just that.
Thanks Bill - I do have a local copy of the Scriptorium as well as decent backups which on occasion, I have restored to a different local drive just to test a disaster recovery (can you tell that I have to do that at work ? ) . I have to admit though, that I'm not quite as good with my own non-scripto stuff.
We have updated all of the scriptorium links in all forum messages to point to the new domain. Although this is slightly like rewriting history, I think it is the best approach for keeping the relevance of topics that link to the scripto.
I am exceptionally pleased to be able to tell you that the NoteWorthy Scriptorium is now re-incarnated at the following address nwc-scriptorium.org . Please update your bookmarks because this change is permanent.
It is possible that the previous address at vpmag.com will start up again, but if it does, the NoteWorthy files on that server will be deleted in the near future.
The this week's updates have also been included in the new site. There may be a few glitches while the new site is bedded in, so please be patient.
