General Discussion / Re: LOSS OF SOUND
Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>Entertainment>Volume Control and check that the MIDI control is set at maximum. This often gets set to zero whilst you are not looking!

General Discussion / Re: Playing NoteWorthy Tunes on a Modern Church Organ
I.too. am no expert!
Firstly I assume that we are talking about an electronic organ and most of these will have MIDI ports.  I believe that the basic problem might be that there is not a standard for the instructions to be conveyed to the organ to select stops. This will depend on how the organ was originally set up.
If the organ has a MIDI capability then it is almost certain that you can use a "sequencer" to record what you play on the organ and to play it back later, exactly as it was originally played. With dedication you can record a large number of hymns. Playing them is a matter of selecting the tracks and pressing PLAY.
But it is not as easy as often claimed to satisfactorily accompany a service with an automated player. A live organist is aware of the congregation and adjusts tempo and loudmess to suit, and of course the right number of verses has to be taken into account. Often a tune is used for more than one hymn, with different numbers of verses. This is not easy with an automatic player and an amateur button presser.

General Discussion / Re: What is Ostinato?
"Ostinato --persistently repeated musical figure which may occur during section of  composition or even throughout whole piece. Ostinato patterns very often occur in bass, so 'basso ostinato' = ground bass"

From Italian --obstinate

I hope this helps!

General Discussion / Re: And now for something a bit different...
I feel quite abashed after reading of your varied musical talents and experiences! As a humble singer in classical chorus items it has always been a thrill to perform in a live show in front of a good audience. Even such old stagers as the Hallelujah chorus can raise the spirits!

General Discussion / Re: On Creating a Jazz Score
If you have a sound card installed it will be listed under Sound.video and game controllers in Device Manager.  Mine is listed as "Sound Blaster Audigy"
My apologies; as I will be away for a week I cannot reply further.

General Discussion / Re: On Creating a Jazz Score
If you have a sound card in your PC which can accept downloaded soundfonts. there is a wide choice of fonts to cover all types of musical instrument. A font has been recommended as very good for what you want. Sound cards, like much of PC equipment can vary widely in price,   but I have found that the relatively cheap Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 7 gives very good results.  It is available at around  £20 to £25 sterling.
But you must have reasonable quality speakers connected to your PC if you want decent sound.

Version 1.75 Discussion / Re: About the options of NWC v1.75
Seserine,

Can you make it a little more clear what you mean when you refer to "what appears at the edge of a staff(border)" Do you mean such things as Staff Labels, or things printed or written above or  below the Staffs?

General Discussion / Re: How do I add lines to my staff?
I am not exactly certain what you mean by "more than one line". Your heading says that you want to add lines to your staff, but then you refer to not seeing stuff in Print Preview.
A staff has a fixed number of lines, usually five in Western music.
Print Preview, shows you how each page will look when it is printed, unlike the long ribbon of music which you see as you work when using Noteworthy to make or edit music.
You can of course have more than one staff. stacked one above the other in your score as in a conventional piano score.
If your piece of music is not very short, then Print Preview will show you just the first page with one or more rows of one or more staffs; clicking on the "NEXT" button at the top of the Preview page will bring up the next page, and so on.
It is just possible, but very unlikely, that you have chosen a large "Staff Metric"  and the resulting staff, with its particular "Vertical Sizes" is too large to get more than one staff on each page of the chosen paper size.

General Discussion / Re: using on another computer
The program can certainly be installed and used on more than one computer. If it is the person who purchased the program who uses it like this it is logically OK but for some other person to have free use of a very good and very competitively priced program is immoral.

General Discussion / Re: HELP PLEASE!
With Noteworthy open and with a song selected, click on “TOOLS” in the toolbar, and from the drop down menu which appears click on  “OPTIONS”
In the new window, select “MIDI”
You will see two windows; on the left is “Available play devices”, on the right is “Devices used by playback”
In the right hand box it will show what is your current playback device, presumably General Midi.   In the left hand box it will show what alternative devices you have available for use. If ‘Soft Synth’ is correctly installed it will be in that box.
Click on General Midi and it will be highlighted; click on the left facing arrow in the centre and it will change to the left hand side.
Click on Soft synth and highlight it, and use the right pointing arrow to move it into the right hand window, Noteworthy will then use Soft Synth for play back.
Whilst Noteworthy will run with more than one device chosen for playback it is good practice to have only one chosen.

Tony

Note that General Mid may be labelled as Midi Mapper in these windows

General Discussion / Re: MIDI Delay - Windows XP
I have a little program called "EndItAll" installed on my PC. It closes all unnecessary programs which would otherwise be running in the background and taking up PC resources; this can be very effective in improving your PC's performance.

Rick ,

I really should pay more attention. Having moved Windows player away from MIDI files I have not yet had  the zeroed slider, and hope that I won't!

General Discussion / Re: I get no sound now
These technicalities are a bit beyond my knowledge!
I have a folder in "My Music" labelled "Midi Files" containing .mid and some .mp3 files, which I filed there from various sources. Some of them now mystify me - why is there "Boellmann_wet.mp3" and "Boellmann_dry.mp3"?
In All Programs>Accessories> Entertainment>Volume Control  -  Playback Control Window,  'Playback', 'Wave', CD Player' and 'Line-In' sliders are all at Max, but MIDI is, as nearly always is the case, at zero.   Reducing either Playback or Wave sliders affects the volume of playback using Nero Media Player.  This may mean something!
of course, NWC files will still not play unless the MIDI volume control is active.  What I really want is something to stop Microsoft from altering the MIDI voluime setting without my permission.

General Discussion / Re: I get no sound now
I freqently find that Microsoft has re-set my Midi input in Volume Control to zero. I am sure there is somewhere a way to stop it from doing that!

General Discussion / Re: Antonin Reicha - Te Deum
As an aside to the availablity of a CD of this work, I found a Lomdon music shop advertising a copy "Used- as New" at  £99.99. " e weeks later it was £59.99 but then disappeared  I eventually acquired a new copy from a small French site at around £7.50 but that source and others have seemingly dried up.
Classic FM radio have expressed pleasure with it and were1 supposed to be looking to give it an airing  but nothing has happemed for many weeks.  Two choral socieites have expressed and interest. For any one else interested the scores are available from Carus or their agents.

General Discussion / Antonin Reicha - Te Deum
This topic is a little off beat!
Antonin Reicha (Rejcha) was a now little known composer, tutor to famous composers, and a friend of Beethoven. He produced what  I believe is a first rate piece of music, a Te Deum, which is virtually unknown.  It has never been performed in Britain as far as I can ascertain and was performed for the first time in the USA in 2004. There is one recording made fairly recently but now seemingly  unobtainable.
To get an idea of this work, look at Richard Woodroffe's transcription in the Scriptorium; it is worth at least downloading and listening to the first movement   Reitedeum.1 nwc
Tell me if you are not impressed!

General Discussion / Re: Are the rumors true that you can no longer save as midi in unregistered?
A long time ago, a friend asked me whether there was a program he could use on his computer to produce simple transcriptions of music that he could play when taking a service and there was no pianist or organist. I downloaded trial versions of more than 12 programs, ranging from the relatively cheap to the very expensive, and concluded that Noteworthy (1.75) was by far the best and not too expensive.  But I also decided that I would try it for my own amusement.  I downloaded the "Command Reference Guide" which also showed me what NWC could do and what it could not do.  I purchased the full version for what was a very competitive price compared with any other program in any way comparable  ,the only down side being that British Customs and Excise decide that I should pay a substantial duty for the privilege of receiving it and the British Post Office put their own fee on top for collecting the tax.
The point of all this is that NWC is affordable for almost everyone, especially when compared with sums that you pay for buying your PC and for internet usage.  It is not Sibelius and it does not cost more than a fraction of such programs.  You may wish that it did more but you cannot complain about what it does not do.  If you know of a better and cheaper program then buy it.

General Discussion / Identifying music
Can anyone remind me of the program that allows one to identify music from the sequence of the first notes, whether they are of the same pitch or go up or down?
I had such a program on my PC but have lost it.

A new Creative Audigy SE 7.i soundcard would cost you less than £20 sterling including delivery and would accept sound fonts. I find it to be quite adequate  for use with NWC

This link may lead to drivers for  Soundblaster Pro, although I have not tried it and do not know if it will work.

Post script. I have downloaded from this link and the product is apparently a copy  of the original software supplied with SoundBlaster Pro on two CDs   It is applicable to
   Win3.1, Win95, Win98, Win98SE, WinME, WinNT3.51, WinNT4, Win2000, WinXP, Win2003

General Discussion / Re: Looking for better sound
Inspired by this thread, I downloaded the Yamaha synth from "DriversDown"  It is the version for  Win2000/XP and my download manager gave it a pass in a security check. I have installed it but not yet tried it as I have to re-boot first. I am prepa1ring my excuses for the possibility of Ymaha pursuing me.

Tips & Tricks / Re: Controlling the length of hairpins
It is interesting to see how one can adjust the lengths of hairpins, but for many "ordinaty" users of the program, without technical skills, but with some degree of musical ability. it would be highly desirable to have a simple way of achieving the desired end.

General Discussion / Re: Upgrade Issues Running Version 2.24
We all have differing set-ups for using computers, but I have a shelf above my working area where I keep all my "essential" computer discs, including my NWC disc.  I not infrequently find with some programs that I have to re-load the program to solve some problem. Up-dating NWC2 before finally loading the "finished" program presented no difficulties.

General Discussion / Short length hidden staves.
I am sure this has been raised before, but I cannot track down the subject.  Sometimes I want to add a hidden staff for only a few bars, where there is a tricky bit of notation, perhaps involving chords and rests or the like. But I have to fill in the whole of the hidden staff with rests, just to create a few bars. Is there a work around?

General Discussion / Re: History?
I have a folder called "NWC files" and every time I use NWC the song is eventually saved to that folder. Of course you have to watch the naming to avoid overwriting something. But I don't think I have ever used the History feature.
