General Discussion / Paste as new file
Just wondering: if I have in the clipboard something that starts with "!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.75,Single)" I can paste it in the current score or "paste as new file". Ok.
But if I have something that starts with "!NoteWorthyComposer(2.75)" and a score opened, why NWC does not paste it automatically "as new file" but instead does a mess on the current score?  :D

General Discussion / Odd flow
I don't understand why the second time NWC jumps at measure 10 instead of 14.
This doesn't happen if the bar between measures 9 and 10 becomes single instead of double.

General Discussion / Transparent bar line
Just wondering: what's the difference between an invisible but "standard" bar line and a "transparent" one?
Or, if you prefer, what's a "transparent bar line" good for?
57
General Discussion / Slimming spacers
Spacers can be inserted and enargened using the "insert" key but, as far as I know, there is not a fast way to "slim" them down.
You have to access the property tab, select a new spacer width, then close the tab and check if you guessed the right amount.
If the result is not what you like, you have to repeat the operation again and again...

Yes, ok, you can remove it and then insert and increase it until you're stasfied, but this looks like a chemical titration...
If you ever did it you know what I mean!

I suggest to add the keyboard shortcuts '+' to enlarge and '-' to trim it.
Of course only when the spacer is selected!

General Discussion / Midi import bugs
It seems that, no matter if "insert instrument change" is checked or not, when opening a midi file without using the wizard the instrument changes are not imported.
Also the note resolution and rest resolution seem ignored. (This explains why I never had any effect fiddling with those parameters!)

Using the import wizard with the same options does get the "instrument change", but the imported score rhithm is... completely wrong.

Just to be clear, this is without wizard (correct):

User Tools / Arpeggiate
This is a tool similar to my ArpeggiateChord.php but makes use of the new object Arpeggio.ms by Mike.
In this way I hope I will get it right the first time without having to remember to mute the chord...  ;D

N.B. Since Mike registered "ms" for the "objects" and he really deserves the right to use it, I'm marking my own tools (and maybe future "objects") with "fl".  :)
60
User Tools / Change tempo
A user tool to change all the tempos in a selection.
Needs a numeric parameter.

A straight number means that the first tempo indication will be set to that value. All the others will be changed by the same proportion.
Example: 120

A percent number multiplies all the tempos by that amount.
Example: 120% means +20%

A signed percent number changes all the tempos by that amount.
Examples: +20% means 120%, -15% means 85%

N.B. This tool ignores the NWC multi point controller called "tempo".
61
General Discussion / Markers
Well, having the possibility of using markers to adjust articulations, slurs and triplets is very good.
But to be forced to use markers each time you have a staccato with a slur is a p.i.t.a.!
Not to say if you then, for some reason, decide to swap the stem direction of a block of notes... All the markers must be adjusted by hand!
Terrible.
Or am I missing something?
62
General Discussion / A bit outdated...
Form the NWC help:

Windows XP enhancements
If you are using Windows XP, several enhancements will be automatically available in this new version. This new version is more aware of the themes feature that is controlled from the Display applet of the Control Panel. Your selected theme and more of the controls in the program interface will be consistent with your selected theme. Windows XP also allows user control over the hand cursor, and this new version utilizes this system cursor. Lastly, the File Open and Save dialogs include extra options that are only available on Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista systems.

 :))  :))  :))  :))

General Discussion / StaffLabel
With reference to what I explained in this trick, I have a problem.
In the conductor score you have all the instruments at once, so it makes no sense to add the StaffLabel of just a staff (the last one, I discovered) in the page text.

Of course you can temporarily remove the StaffLabel object when you need to print the conductor score, but you must have one object for each staff for printing the single parts so the thing becomes easily tedious.

Any idea?
64
Tips & Tricks / PageTxt
I'm now using PageTxt to put the page number, the title and the name of the part (staff label) on each page after the first one.
Wow!
Very good when you're in a hurry and you discover that the sheets are shuffled...  :))
But there is a catch: NWC puts what I told him where I told him but, if in need of space, he doesn't think twice on overlap it with a staff.

Of course, I can locally enlarge the staff boundary so as to leave enough room for the text, but this must be done manually for each page or you finish having on average an excessive distance between staves.

Since I'm working at the top and/or the bottom of the page, the trick I use is to enlarge the relevant page margin so as to have a "no flight zone" for NWC, then inserting a PageTxt with an Y offset that puts the text exactly in the page margin.
Voilà.

Of course this is no rocket science and maybe neither the best solution (Rick?) but it solved an old problem of mine, and that's very welcome.
H.T.H.

General Discussion / When new is new?
I just discovered that looking for new postings using the "new" markers makes me losing a lot of news.

Ok, when someone edits a message then this message is not exactly new. At most: recycled.  :D
Anyway, I'd prefer that those messages were counted as "new posts" and indicated as such.

Well, since clicking "new" brings directly on the chronologically older new message, I understand that it's not so sraughtforward to o the same with the edited messages.
Anyway....

General Discussion / nwmid95c.*
Looking at the "NoteWorthy Composer 2" directory in Win XP I see nwmid95c.dll and nwmid95c.dlt dated, almost exactly, 11 years ago.
They look as a relic of win 95 with no reference to them.
Can I safely delete them?

By the way: nwc-conv.exe dated 2011 is still fully usable?
68
General Discussion / Undo
Hint: why not add the undo function (at least one level) to the edit boxes?
I'm thinking in special mode to the lyrics one, but also the others.
For a blunderer like me...
69
General Discussion / Fetching preview...
It seems the forum is now unable to generate a preview.
It stops saying "Fetching preview..." for an eternity.
It's my browser to blame or the problem is in the forum?
70
General Discussion / Drag & drop of a link
I just discovered that the drag & drop of a lnk file on NWC doesn't work:
Quote
NoteWorthy Composer does not recognize the file type 'lnk', so it is unable to open the file.
Clicking on it works perfectly.

Not a big problem, only a bit surprised.
71
General Discussion / Double minus
I "copied the full report" from "Score review" and discovered that the negative transpositions have 2 "-".
One is enough! :-)
72
General Discussion / Multiple samples
While working on a score, my daughter opened drumref.nwc as a help through "file->open sample".
Then later she forgot to have it already opened and opened it again.
Later, the same and again.

When I looked at the open files list at the bottom of NWC I discovered she had 4 copies of the same file (drumref.nwc) opened al the same time.
Usually NWC forbids this and it has even less sense for the samples... or not?

N.B. Of course not a big problem, just wondering.

General Discussion / Why the shorter note?
Why, in case of "double" notes, NWC plays the shorter one?

User Tools / Harmonics
In harp scores the harmonics are notated with a circle above the note.
Since I use them a lot I decided to make a user tool.
In case this can be of use for someone else, here it comes.

General Discussion / Grand staff slur
I hate when I have to reinvent the wheel.
I'm sure I already solved this problem but my memory doesn't collaborate.

I need to draw a slur on a grand staff (see attachement).
I did it, but I'm unable to stop the slur where I need.

My best result so far is as follows.

General Discussion / Clear selected
For a work, I loaded a lot temporary files in NWC. All those files cluttered the file history list so I wanted to remove them.
With my great surprise, even if there is the button "Clear selected", I found no way to select multiple items.
It seems that the button means "Clear the one selected"
Luckily, in my case the files I wanted to remove were consecutive, so I just had to click a lot of times the button, but...

General Discussion / Articulation on the wrong voice
I think long ago I had the same problem, but I can't remember the solution.

In this snippet, in the first chord of bars 2 and 4, the staccato of course refers to the lower chord, not to the upper theme.
I'm unable to put the dot below the chord.
Any idea?

As you can ear, that's not the case.
To begin with, it slows down the first time too (why?).
Then, when it reaches the "ritardando" for the second time, all of a sudden it restores the standard time and then slows down. (???)

I tried this way:

With my great surprise, now it never slows down.

It seems that the tempo indications are not subjected to the special endings parser.

General Discussion / Hint
Just before a concert, my daughter mixed up the pages of the various pieces she had to play.
She had no time to sort them all, so my wife volunteered to do it for her.

Small problem: my wife knows very little about musical notation and many pages had the page number but not the title of the piece...

Why not allow to print somewere in all the pages (header or footer) the title in small characters?

N.B. My daughter had to play by heart. :-)
81
General Discussion / How do you say "OK"?
In the dialogs, how do you say "Ok" with the keyboard?
The only way I found is to press tab until the focus is on the "Ok" button.
Very annoying, in particular in the dialogs with a lot of components.
82
General Discussion / What time is it?
I have a couple of scores by Alan Stivell.
For both the time is 6/8 and the tempo is indicated as "100 = quaver" and "132 = quaver".
I set the tempo in NWC as "quaver = 100" and "quaver = 132". It's the same thing, isn't it?

I never heard the first piece but, sure, the second one is waaaaay too slow.
An acceptable value for the latter is "dotted crotchet = 132".

How should I read the Stivell's tempo indications? (I don't think I could ask him ;-)
83
General Discussion / Hidden dot
In this snippet, the dot of the first note is hidden.

Code: (nwc) [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.51,Single)
|TimeSig|Signature:6/8
|Chord|Dur:4th,Dotted,Slur|Pos:-5|Opts:Stem=Up,Slur=Upward|Dur2:Half,Dotted|Pos2:-5
|Note|Dur:4th,Dotted,Slur|Pos:-1|Opts:Slur=Upward
|Bar
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End

The score where it comes from allows a bit more space between the notes to show the dot.
84
General Discussion / Change staff metrics
I think I already asked this, but I don't remember the answer.
Why, while changing staff metrics with "proportionately scale other staff font sizes", the user font sizes don't change?
Maybe they were conceived as something not "staff font", but more often than not, if not always, I'd prefer them to scale.
What do you think about it?
85
General Discussion / Import resolutions
I must admit I never really understood what Note Resolution and Rest Resolution
do. I never found any difference.

Now I imported a file with a slight defect in the rhithm.
I find very boring to adjust it by hand, so I selected Note Resolution = Quarte Note: no change.
I then selected Whole Note: no change.

No matter what I choose, I keep getting this:

Am I missing sometring?

General Discussion / Got it, at last!
Sometimes happened to me that suddenly the '+' and '-' keys stopped working, but I was always in a hurry and I had no time to investigate.
Each time, when later I tried to reproduce the effect, it never reappeared.
I started suspecting I had dreamed. ;-)

Now I got it!
Open the attached file, select the 1/32 note and try to change its duration using '+' and '-'.
It doesn't change.

Be careful: the effect is very fragile. If you try the same on a file saved as .nwctxt the keys '+' and '-' work as expected!

General Discussion / Subtitle
Why not to introduce the possibility of an optional subtitle just below the title?
It doesn't seem so difficult to program and lately I found myself wishing for it.
90
User Tools / Appoggiature
Here is my tool to convert a standard NWC grace note to an appoggiatura.

The tool converts all the selected combinations of a single grace note coupled with a standard one.
Please take care to include the standard note in the selection.

For details see https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=8429.0
(Many thanks to Rick)
91
General Discussion / False da capo (al fine)
I have multiple movements in a single NWC file.

A movement has "da capo al fine".
Of course in this case the "capo" is not the score beginning and the "fine" is not the end of the music but only the end of the movement.

There's a way to simulate that without explicitly repeating what needs to be repeated (using the visibility: never attribute)?

N.B. Some master repeats are already used in the movement.
92
General Discussion / False acciaccatura
There is a way to make this one:

Code: (nwc) [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.5,Single)
|Note|Dur:8th,Grace|Pos:2|Opts:Muted
|Note|Dur:4th|Pos:1|Opts:Stem=Down,Muted
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End

looking as is, but sounding as

Code: (nwc) [Select · Download]
!NoteWorthyComposerClip(2.5,Single)
|Note|Dur:8th|Pos:2|Visibility:Never
|Note|Dur:8th|Pos:1|Visibility:Never
!NoteWorthyComposerClip-End

Without using layering, I mean... (Too easy otherwise ;-)
93
General Discussion / MMR for coupled staves
I notated a score for two harps (see attached file), then I tried to extract the two parts.
Extracting the harp I alone, I expected two MMR at the beginning.
Nope: the MMR are expanded.

Single staff printing and multi staff printing can't be of help.

The only way to have them showing up as MMR was to set their visibility to "always".
Inconvenient, don't you agree?

94
General Discussion / Margins
In the "page setup" margin input edit boxes, copy and paste are not allowed.
Why?

And then the decimal dot must be... well, a decimal dot.
As you know, here in the old Europe many (me too) use the comma.

With few exceptions, in my programs I allow both characters as "decimal dots" in input and use the locale (courtesy of windows :-) for the display.
95
General Discussion / Optional warning when closing
I'd like to have a (optional) warning when closing NWC with more than one score open.
It happened to me that, while listening to a score, I looked at another. Then, having finished with the latter and wishing to close it, by mistake I closed NWC.

Well, of course I could be smarter but I think it's too late... I think I can only become more stupid! :-)
96
User Tools / Mordent
Following the same line as my other tools, this one inserts the mordents.
Adding the parameter "r" or "-" inserts the reverse mordent.
Assumes: font User1 = MusikDingsxxx
97
General Discussion / M.D.C.
At the end of a movement I found the acronym M.D.C.
What does it means?

My best guess: "movimento da capo". (Do you need translation? :-)
99
User Tools / Trilli
A small tool to automatically add trilli.

Assumes: font User1 = MusikDingsxxx

Once again, the trillo can be interpreted differently depending on the period, the composer etc. but I think this is a good starting point.
Of course, you can always do it by hand or use a hidden layedered staff, if you prefer...

Warning: exceeding 15 consecutive grace notes makes odd effects. NWC oddity.
As usual, Rick got a workaround, but it's not so easy to automate.
100
User Tools / Turns
A small tool to automatically add turns (and reverse turns).
Adding the parameter "r" or "-" inserts the reverse turn.

Assumes: font User1 = MusikDingsxxx

Yes, I know, the turns can be interpreted differently depending on the period, the composer etc. but I think this is a good starting point.
Of course, you can always do it by hand if you prefer...
