General Discussion / Re: Favourite/preferred Soundfont(s)

Guardati qualche esempio nello scriptorium.

Chiarissimo... per me. Per gli altri del gruppo probabilmenteun po' meno.  :D

It's a long long time since I experienced an NWC crash. And I use it a lot.
I suppose it is something outside NWC.

N.B. Virtual midi Synt is based on Bass, the same engine embedded in the NW viewer.

It all depends on what you're needing!  ;)
Usually, the default is quite ok.
I was dealing with an odd request.

General Discussion / Re: Import troubles
I think I got it.

The import wizard says: "The options below control how each track will be mapped into staves".
Also "Separate MIDI channels", in Options->Import->Track splitting options (in the help it's called "Map each MIDI channel to new staff") makes it clear: different track, different staff.
But, unless you're dealing with a MIDI type 0 file, who has only one track, usually (always...) each track has only one channel.

I was hoping I can still manually force all che channels in a single staff by editing the "list of import instructions" in the import wizard but it's impossible.

It seems the only way is the one I did: convert the MIDI file to type 0 and then import it with "Map each Midi Channel to a new staff" unchecked.

General Discussion / Re: Import troubles
No, Rich, I didn't, but that's not my problem.
The problem is strictly connected with channels and tracks.
And, even using a MIDI file type 0, I get a "tempo" hidden staff too.
260
General Discussion / Import troubles
I tried to import a MIDI file putting all the channels in a single staff.
Of course I unchecked the relevant option and... one staff per channel, no matter.

To have all in a single staff I had to save the MIDI file in format type 0. This way it works.
But I saw nowhere the indication of "not for MIDI type 1".
Did I miss it?

General Discussion / Re: Arpeggio symbol help please
Harp? Nope!
The (classic or orchestral) harp is tuned in Cb and you have a pedal for each (diatonic, seven) note.
With the pedals you can rise the notes (all the notes of the same name in all the octaves) by one or two semitones.
Differently said, each note pedal has three positions: flat, natural and sharp.

Of course you can have both a B# and a C# but, indeed, this is written B# and C#, not C and C#.
You can not put the same pedal in two different positions at once!  ;)

General Discussion / Re: "Scoring Notes" article on the history of notation programs
My needs for musical notation do not change over time, so I have no need for "further development" (same for e.g. the text editor I use - a version of UltraEdit from around 2005, I think; and quite a few other tools).
The same for me (UltraEdit included  :) ).
Anyway it disturbs me knowing it's practically abandoned.
And I fear Windows 11, and 12 and... (Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes!)

Object Plugins / Re: PrintConfiguration (0.1)
c) "Staff Labels" does not work. Even when I manually tweak a .nwctxt file, this options is not correctly written into the PgSetup.
I suspect this has to do with the blank in "First System", "All Systems" etc., therefore only "None" works. Is this true?
and if so, how can I set the StaffLabels slot correctly with a user tool??
No, for sure it doesn't depends on the blank.
I did this way with no problem:
Code: (nwc) [Select · Download]
    Item = nwcItem.new("|AddStaff");
    Item:Provide("Name","Perc. staff ".tostring(HighestPercStaffNumber))
    Item:Provide("Group","Percussions")
    Item:Provide("Label","Wood Blocks")
    table.insert(MidiStaves[StaffCount],Item)

General Discussion / Re: Ghost note
I tested Airfont380_Final and the result is: no problem.
I can hope the bug was fixed, but remember that the problem appears only in a very particular case.
Who knows if, by chance, the problem now appears only for, say, Bb2?
272
General Discussion / Re: Ghost note
I had little doubt the problem is caused by the "note off" event who, I don't know why, becomes a "note on".
As now I expected, even driving an external MIDI keyboard from NWC is ok.
N.B. The soundfont is Airfont 340.

I understand what you describe since I already met it but, sorry, no psychoacustics this time.
Just plain old hearing!  :D
Listen yourself.

General Discussion / Re: Ghost note
I don't understand.
On my computer there's a new key on at the last top F (F# indeed) and only that note, even if the note is tied.

I tried it on my daughter's computer and everything is ok (windows 10 & VirtualMIDISynth).
I exported it to MIDI and it's ok also on my computer.
If I shif it down one octave it's ok.
If I shif it down one fifth it's ok.
If I shif it up one second it's ok.
If I shif it down one second it's ok.

So, who's to blame?
NWC?
VirtualMIDISynth (an old version: 2.9.3, the last usable on XP)?
Windows XP?
N.B. Of course, the MIDI player uses the same VirtualMIDISynth as NWC.

I'm completely clueless.

User Tools / Re: MUSICXML TO NOTEWORTHY CONVERTER
Theoretically, in the dreaded "setticlavio" (seven clefs), there are four position for the C clef (Soprano, Mezzosoprano, Contralto, Tenore) and two positions for the F clef (Baritono and Basso) (and just one for the treble clef!  ;D ).
But I never saw a treble or bass clef in any other position than the usual, and anyway NWC doesn't allows for all of them, so I agree with you.

The only way I can see for NWC to compete is to open up even more, maybe to the point of open-sourcing it, but at least to the point of providing an API to call all actions and modify a score temporarily extensively
In a tool I'm working on I had to reinvent the wheel.
Absolutely sure, all the difficulties I met are already solved since a long time in NWC, but lacking the relevant API calls...

Keep dreaming.

General Discussion / Re: Is there a way to convert fermatas into tempo markers before export?
If I got it right, I suppose the problem is that the fermate are not exported to MIDI but only operate when played by NWC.
N.B. The tempo changes are exported.
Well, it should not be too difficult to emulate them.

Each unit of delay of a fermata is 1/16 so you can put in the score, instead of a fermata (of course you can leave the gliph with delay set to 0), a hidden rest or a hidden tied note in each staff so as to restore the proper timing.

And, of course, no, I'm not aware of any tool for doing this automatically.

General Discussion / Re: Support for Error: Missing Font NWC2STDA
Which Font foder?
Windows\Fonts or NoteWorthy Composer 2\Fonts?

NoteWorthy Composer 2\Fonts contains fonts.ini which contains the lines:

; ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
; The [Fonts] section contains a list of fonts that will be dynamically loaded

General Discussion / Re: Bug when using percussion
About the instruments not included in GM, it's possible you can get them on GM2, GS and/or XG.
XG it typically Yamaha and GS Roland. GM2 is quite similar to GS.
Anyway those are standards, so using them shouldn't be so odd.

By the way: the GM2 standard requires that, if your instrument has not a specific instrument (patch), then the closest sounding one is automatically selected. Previously, that instrument simply didn't play.
291
General Discussion / Re: Bug when using percussion
are you saying I cannot have more than 16 separate instruments
Let say 15 if you exclude channel 10 (percussion).

Workarounds:
  • you use more MIDI playback devices. 16 (15...) channels for each device. Very good but very unportable.
  • you share the same channel with various instruments. Not always easy but often feasible.

The trick in the case 2 is to reuse the same channel for a different instrument (staff) when the others instruments are silent.
When a new instrument must take the place of another you simply put an "instrument change" in the new instrument staff selecting the old instrument channel. That's it.
Of course this can be repeated at wish.

Many years ago I had a GEM keyboard who had only 5 patches (channels...) at once. Imagine how many instrument swaps!

User Tools / Re: USERTOOL: show_all_note_names.lua
Gosh! How am I expected to ascertain the harmony when the notes are transposed in a mixed way?
For example, when I have some instruments in C, some in Bb and some in Eb I can see the '>' or the '<', but I'm alone on quickly estimate the harmony, which, I think, defeats the purpose of this tool.
What I got wrong?

General Discussion / Re: Turn the stems horizontally
Isn't this (almost) exactly what H.M. did?
The only problem I see is if you try to play it: there must be a flat also for the D with the stem down.

A doubt: did you use F11 or print preview to check the result?
(Ovvero: non è che per caso non hai attivato la visualizzazione "layered"?)

I always wondered where "Ti" comes from.
For a long time I was sure I misheard it!  :D  Then, somewhere, I read it...

Also the "solfeggio" name for what are, for us Italians, the standard notes was a bit of surprise to me.
It shouldn't. How can someone sing ("solfeggiare") "C" or "G"?  :))

UT queant laxis
REsonare fibris
...
LAbii reatum
Sancte Ioannes

The seventh note is called "Si" from "Sancte Ioannes"
Ut was replaced with Do at least since 1536 in a text by Pietro Aretino and comes from "Dominus".
