Instrument Trees / itree file for CASIO CTK-5000
I offer my recently-constructed itree file for anyone that wants it.

I cut & pasted the text from a file I found on the web that was for this keyboard but for a completely different purpose.  I haven't cross-checked all the instrument names, so this file is offered as 'untested'; but I have been using it myself and have found it a great help in de-stressing the process of selecting instruments for my particular set-up.

The keyboard came with a User Guide and an Appendix, in which was listed all this information.  The below file saves typing that lot in again.  It includes the Drums and Sampled sounds selections.

I left the Casio voice numbers in, so that it is easy to cross-reference with what gets squeezed on to the keyboard's screen.

One little 'bug' I noticed, is that it is possible in nwc to select a branch name as though it were a voice.  The text of the branch name is copied into the nwc dialogue but the patch & bank selection is left unchanged with no warning given, so one can fail to realise one's error, with the usual hilarious consequences.

You will need to cut & paste the following into a Notepad file and save as eg 'CASIO CTK-5000.nwcitree' in your Instrument Trees folder (see nwc menu Tools>Options>Folders for its location).

General Discussion / Re: Read-only bak files
Oh, sorry, I assumed were an employee with access to all those things.

I have a rather dubious view of the internal politics of nwc, based on previous cryptic exchanges on this forum!

Your well-informed input to this forum is appreciated.

General Discussion / Re: Desirable features - list of?
Oh, I see this is a form to submit wishes.

That's fine, but I was also interested in what had already been wished.  I have loads of ideas - it would take me a while to describe them all properly, when perhaps others had already done that.

Surely an open (albeit moderated) wishlist, and a voting/comments system, would be highly useful?

Should I suggest this, as my first wish?

General Discussion / Desirable features - list of?
Is there a list somewhere, or a topic, where I could see what has already been thought about or proposed for future releases?  I have a few ideas for improvements that I would find useful - where can I put these on record (or see that they already are)?

General Discussion / Re: Read-only bak files
Rick -

I read the old discussion thread with interest but without enlightenment.  What conclusion did you come to?  And what does your cryptic reply here mean?  Do you mean that nwc should not allow saving to read-only files?  So what then is stopping you from implementing it?

It would certainly seem to bring nwc into line with everyone else.

General Discussion / Re: Placement of two chord members of the same (overlapping) note pitch
Tony

From your description, the notehead represents a G sharp (a single note).  It is not two notes in a chord, because if it was, then two noteheads, side by side, would have been written.  It is unlikely that a piece would have a natural and a sharp apply to the same note, an F double-sharp would do the job in place of the G natural, and preserve the integrity of the key.  Mind you, every rule has its exceptions.

As Rick suggests, it is not uncommon, where a note has had an accidental applied to it (eg G double-sharp) in the previous one or two bars, to indicate that it is being 'reset' with a natural sign, before being given a new accidental value (or given back its key signature value).  If the natural precedes the sharp sign on the same ledger line, as you describe, then this seems the most likely explanation.

General Discussion / Read-only bak files
I offer this observation.

I often set my nwc files as read-only (using Windows Explorer).  I do this when I have completed a project, which may involve MS Word, jpg artwork and so on.  This way I can 'freeze' a project, and resist the temptation to start fiddling with a file that really I only meant to open and look at, or re-print.

NWC (great product), doesn't tell you the file you have open is read-only - until that is you try and save it.  After warning you that you are trying to save a read-only file, it will then let you do it.  It removes the read-only attribute!  Then NWC says that the backup file can't be created.  This is because NWC has set the associated .bak file as read-only.  So you need to find your .bak file (I keep mine somewhere handy, fortunately) and set the attribute off again.

I would imagine this is unintended behaviour.  Personally, I like to know the file is read-only while it is open; and to be forced to save changes under a new name (you'll tell me I can always make a rational choice to do this....but then you haven't seen me on a bad day).  This also avoids any funnies with backup files.

General Discussion / Re: Placement of two chord members of the same (overlapping) note pitch
On returning after a few days, I find that I must thank you all for your answers.  Such musical erudition displayed!  The answer I needed was the confirmation that nwc2 is treating these notes differently from nwc1, it's not just some setting that I have missed.

The Faure piece I mentioned falls into the category of unambiguous (or of acceptable ambiguity) when determining note length.  I find that most of the piano music in my poor library does.  When so many aspects of written music are ambiguous (how exactly did Mozart intend that sonata to be played?), it seems fastidious to balk at a dot being overwritten.  I read your quotations from Ms Gould as implying that it is by exception that one should clarify.  That's when to use layering!

The suggestion that I re-work hundreds of hours of effort in my old files to add layering so that I can print them is a little prosaic.  Keeping a copy of nwc1.75 is a more realistic option.  Best to keep it simple, for my benefit.

General Discussion / Placement of two chord members of the same (overlapping) note pitch
I have searched the forum as best I can, sorry if this is already answered but:

I have some old files that I want to open and print.  NWC2.1 displays differently a chord composed of two notes with the same pitch but different time values.  In pre-NWC2 the noteheads overlap so effectively there is one notehead with two stems, one upwards and one downwards.  The different stems depict the two different time values.  In NWC2 the noteheads are shown next to eachother, they are not overlayed.  If one of the notes is dotted, there may be a gap wide enough for the dot between the notes.  This placement is confusing for the musician to read, and is not standard practice.

Is this a 'feature' of NWC2 or have I missed something?!

Cheers
Dave
