General Discussion / Installing on a Netbook
I have seen some discussion about this, but have not seen any resolution.  I have a Netbook, i.e. no disc drive, which is NOT networked with my other computers (it is running Win 7, the others XP, and I can't get them to play nice).  I tried to "rip" the installation CD to an .iso file, but the program I used wouldn't do it (it did work with Corel WordPerfect) so I can't transfer the .iso and mount it as a virtual drive.

Is there a way to get NWC installed on this device????

General Discussion / Layered staff with accidental collision
This has probably been hashed over, but I could recognize it in the search.

See the attach snippet.  This is a pair of staves, layered.  Is there any way to let a bit of air between the G and the following accidental?

General Discussion / Sound Card Question -- semi-OT
There seem to be more helpfull sound-card mavins here than any place else, so I'm dropping a question on the forum.

I have just ordered a new computer from Dell, which only comes with an integrated sound device.  The box will have a couple of free PCI slots.  I also have a quite old box which is mostly empty, the motherboard having died.  It has (had, I just pulled it out) a Sound Blaster Live! with the digital piggy-back cardlet.  The main card is model CT4620, the add-on is CT4660.  These were running under W98, while the new box will have XP on it (I just beat the dead-line, Dell will stop offering XP on June 17th).

Does anyone know if this card would be better than the built-in, and if it will run under XP?

I found a patch on the Creative site, but it says that it needs the drivers which were posted on July 17 2002, but the site doesn't seem to HAVE that package!  There is nothing that seems relevant to the 4660, either.

Any advice will be welcome -- including advise to chuck the thing.

General Discussion / Several question vis-a-vis a Bach score.
Having just heard a preformance of Bach's Goldberg Variations (live, on a two-manual Steinway piano!) I went and looked at the score, thinking about entering it.  But I ran into several road-blocks.

The major one is in variation 26, where one staff is in 18/16 time, and the other in 3/4.  each quarter note (crotchet) in the second staff matches six sixteenth notes (semiquavers (?)) in the first.  Is there any workable work-around for this?  Remember, this is a copy of a mid-nineteenth century score, not a modern experimental work!

There as also a number of ornaments which do not seem to occur in any of the fonts I currently have.  These include trill-like symbols, but with angles, not curves, with and without crossing vertical lines and various hooks at the front.  Does anyone know where to find these.

Finally, there are standard bugaboos such as notes on either side of a beam, and (as in a current thread) smaller clefs, some in the middle of beamed groups of notes.

Any ideas, anyone?  Other than fugedabotit.

General Discussion / Somewhat OT, but perhaps of interest. Slowing things down.

Around the Clock, Beethoven Magnified
By DANIEL J. WAKIN
Never has listening to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony required so much attention: Leif Inge, a Norwegian who calls himself an “idea-based artist,” has digitally elongated the work to last 24 hours.

General Discussion / What does a velocity override of zero mean on dynamics?
I've read a number of threads on the subject of dynamics, velocity and volume, but one thing escapes me.

I've been trying to dynamicly (in a repeat loop) mute and unmute notes on a staff without effecting other staves using the same channel (see my too numerous posts in the newsgroup).  It was suggested that I use the velocity override on a dynamic marker to do this, but I found that the note still sounds even if the velocity is set to zero.

Is this a general MIDI (no pun intended) rule, or a quirk of the SB-Live sound card?  What DOES velocity of zero mean?

General Discussion / Font hackery
I'm fiddling with the Boxmarks font, adding some characters.  I'm using Corel Draw (version 8), which lets me manipulate characters, replacing or adding them to an existing font.  What I haven't figured out is how to change the name of the font (not the name of the .ttf file, but the name that shows up in font tables).  Can anyone enlighten me?

General Discussion / Problems with Newgroup
For the past couple of days I have been getting a message that the newsgroup server "refused connection".  I had had problems with email, with the server name getting corrupted, so I deleted the ezusa server and tried to resubscribe, but I have gotten the same "refused connection" message.

I'm using NS 7.01 on Win98SE.

General Discussion / Missing post(s)?
Yesterday I posted a reply (two, in fact) to a thread on guitar tablature.  I looked this morning and saw that there had been no further activity.  This afternoon the thread is no where to be seen.  Is there a problem on my machine, on the server, or was the thread removed?
