General Discussion / Page numbers/ measure numbers
I have composed a piece for string orchestra and am trying to get the score and parts readable. I am adjusting placement of various markings, like tempo, rehearsal number, etc. so they don't interfere with one another. One thing that I can't solve is that my measure numbers interfere with my page numbers. I tried adjusting page margins, spacing between staves, etc. but can't seem to resolve this.
I am printing on 8.5x11 paper, there are 5 instruments and my score font size is 18, which gives me 3 lines per page, which is what I want.

Any thoughts?

General Discussion / NWC and Aria Player
I hate to repeat this question, but I will anyway. I have NWC 2.0 and Garriton Aria Player, GPO4. I've been successful in using Aria with NWC for string orchestra and string quartet, setting up my Aria file one instrument at a time.

Now when I tried to create a new Aria file, it only offers me combinations- piano and flute, piano duet- I can't assign just piano to one staff. Weird.

So that's one question- how do I get to selecting individual instruments for individual staves?

The other thing I found when researching this is an article titled, 'Using GPO with Noteworthy Composers' by Jose Miguel Serrano.

If you look at the second screenshot, it shows multiple GPO devices that are available to NWC to be selected as playback devices. How do you get GPO into that MIDI window? I have a feeling things would be a lot easier if I could directly select GPO, rather than using the virtual cable to access Aria Player.

Am I way off base here?

Thanks,

John Mahony

General Discussion / Recording Compositions
Is there a way to record a composition and save the recording for playback on other devices? I use Garriton instruments with NWC and I would like to be able to play the piece on my iPhone/iPod.

As far as I can tell, the record button is for importing music. Is that correct?

Thanks,

John

General Discussion / Grand Staff
I would like to see how my string orchestra piece is spaced out on one staff. Is it possible to create a Grand Staff- 11 lines- and insert notes from various instruments.

Is this possible in NWC?

Thanks,

John

General Discussion / Re: tremolo
Lawrie,

I have downloaded your Pardy Pak and have used it somewhat. One of the features important to me is the tremelo or eigth/sixteenth hashmarks. I have gotten the hashmarks where I want them on the note stems, but when I print them out, they're in a different location!

Another thing is when using the Pardy Pak fonts, I use the text command. But when I select the appropriate Pardy font, the other text inserts go to the characters of the Pardy font, not the font that they were inserted with.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

John

General Discussion / Re: Garriton- Revisited
Lawrie,

Thanks for the response. My PC is loaded up pretty good, so CPU capacity is a real possibility. I'll see what I can do about that.
The Garriton help hasn't been any help at all. I'll try the forum, see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the suggestions.

General Discussion / Garriton- Revisited
Some time ago, I bought the Garriton Personal Orchestra 4.0 to use with NWC. With help I downloaded a virtual MIDI called LoobBe1. I am somewhat satisfied, but there are still some issues. The sounds are better than the MS sounds that come with NWC, but I'm not blown away at all.

I am using this to write an orchestral piece. At the moment I am only scoring it for string orchestra.

1.) On my desktop (Dell Optiplex 745, stock) the sound file seems to have a background static sort of sound that is intermittent in its frequency and intensity. The sound is not clean at all.

2.) Also on my desktop, the bass staff has a severe fuzztone. I just replaced my speakers with a system that includes a subwoofer, so I know it isn't that.

Any thoughts? Is there a setting that I'm missing or do I need a different soundcard or something???

I appreciate any help you can give me. It's getting frustrating, having spent $150 for the Garriton.

Thanks,

John Mahony

General Discussion / Re: Garriton??
I would like to thank Geoff Allan for his help offline getting Garriton/Aria to work for me. Does anyone else use Garriton for instrument sounds?
I'm having a couple minorish issues.

Thanks,

John

Yes you can use Garritan/Aria Player or any other similar software midi driven player by using LoopBe1 internal midi port - free driver available. Then Noteworthy plays to the device LoopBe and Garritan Aria Player receives on LoopBe Internal Midi.
I use this method all the time for orchestral rendering.

Cheers,

Geoff Allan

General Discussion / Downloaded Pardy Pack- now what?
I just downloaded Pardy Pack to access symbols that couldn't previously get- like hash marks for tremolo. It installed rather quickly. Now how do I access it?
I read some of the posts about this stuff and I still am scratching my head on how to use it.

Thanks,

John

General Discussion / Phantom Slur
OK, boys, you've been very helpful in the past, hopefully you can bail me out again. I have a file where at the end of the bass system, I put in a note, low E, half note before a DS al Fine. Two weird things happened-  1.) there is a slur or tie that stretches back about 17 measures to a whole REST! Now the weird thing is, when the note is in my screen, the slur continues to previous measures off the screen. When I scroll to find the origin, the slur disappears. I did this several times until I finally zoomed out until I could see the whole slur. That's when I saw that it originated in a measure with the rest. I went to that measure and moved the curser with the arrows hoping there might be an invisible character, but there was none and 2.) the inserted half note doesn't sound during playback- the rest of the line does.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

John Mahony

General Discussion / Re: Unmarked tempo change?
Turns out there are about 5 hidden systems- one called 'conductor' and there was a stringendo command at the offending location.
I like Warren's suggestion about creating a system for tempos, rehearsal symbols, etc for printing parts.

Thanks.

General Discussion / Unmarked tempo change?
OK, hopefully one of you wizards can help me. I'm writing a composition for full orchestra. I couldn't find a template in NWC2 (I think there was one in a previous release), so I copied the Mozart sample, deleted everything but the names of the systems and saved it as my own orchestra template.

I am building up my composition gradually-
1.) I did a lead sheet- melody and chord accompaniment. I put text chord names above the melody.
2.) I created a string orch version with the melody on the Violin1 staff and wrote parts for Violin2, Viola, Cello and Bass.
3.) Now I am putting those parts onto the full orchestral score, using the various instruments.

Here's the problem. I change tempo occasionally and haven't had a problem. I copied one of my parts from the string orch file to the full orch file and for some reason, the tempo was CUT IN HALF! I can't find any tempo change anywhere. I know there are hidden systems, but I can't find them. For example, when I go to the mute command, there are 2 systems identified- 'Conductor' and 'Violins1dummy'. I'm wondering if there is something on these systems that is trumping my tempo.

Any thoughts??

General Discussion / Garriton??
I've read through several discussions about itrees, etc. and am still confused. Is is possible to use the Garriton library with NWC? I have an old version of Finale that is (to me) unusable, but they sure have good instrument sounds.

I am writing a piece for orchestra would would like to hear it better and to play the piece for my conductor.

If I cannot use Garriton, what can I use and more importantly, how do I get it into the program?

Thanks,

John
