General Discussion / Re: Finished Software?
I'd say the biggest risk we run is that MIDI stops working. Microsoft seems pretty committed to backwards compatibility, and NoteWorthy Composer runs like a dream under Windows 11 for ARM, which I think bodes well for the future.

General Discussion / Re: Part of the lyrics not shown on the Vabasco's Karaoke
All words (except the first one) appear as expected.
Thank you Francis for your answer, what I meant disappeared is in the refrain, when soprano sing " when the roll", it is not shown, but the one the baritone and  tenor and bas " when the roll"  it is shown.
Yours all are shown?

Thank you,

Frank

The file you uploaded only appears to contain the soprano lyrics and as far as I can tell, they are all shown. Is there perhaps a different version that doesn't work?

General Discussion / Re: Script Running?
The weird part is the title of the window - "Web Browser." If it were a legit message, I would expect to see "Microsoft Edge" or "Google Chrome" there. I think a scan for malware might be appropriate.

General Discussion / Re: Snake oil? ;-)
Interesting. The best trombone cream seems to depend greatly on who you ask. I had one instructor who said to just buy POND'S Cold Cream. At any rate, the better cream never seemed to help my playing!

General Discussion / Re: reinstalling NWC
Windows 11 is not terrible. It's a bit like that friend that tries to be "helpful" by reorganizing the kitchen. Everything is still there, of course, but you have to wonder why they decided to put the plates there!

General Discussion / Re: not loud enough
Regarding the missing "o" ... I seem to recall that this is a "feature" of vanBasco. Many MIDI file authors put copyright information as the first lyric syllable, so they decided it was best to just skip it.

General Discussion / Re: quarter note's rest out side of the staff
But I'm not in the UK and these are the names I use...   ;D

Fair enough. I mean, I'd argue that I'm not Arabic and yet, I still use Arabic numerals. Truth be told, I decided to just go with what a random blog post labeled them. Does Elaine Gould have a different name for them?? ;-)

Thank you Francis, I bookmarked your blog, I like it

Frank

You're quite welcome, but it's not my blog, just one that seemed to have a handy chart to steal.

General Discussion / Re: Is anyone using a Windows environment to run NWC on a MAc?
You can use Wine or Crossover. Crossover is essentially the commercial version of Wine for people who want to run Microsoft Office. I’ve used WineBottler in the past - it’s a pretty simple GUI/wrapper for Wine - just point it at the NWC installer and it creates a Mac app out of it. It looks like the last update was in 2019, though, so development may have fallen off.

General Discussion / Re: Beaming compound-time
Perhaps the simplest approach for a user tool would be to explicitly select a grouping from a list and have it work to make the notation conform?

General Discussion / Re: Very Sad news.
Very sorry to hear this. At 5532 posts, he was a true asset to this community. I will miss his brilliant workarounds, even if some of his code did make me scratch my head.

General Discussion / Re: Is the NWC Viewer/Player available as a webpage
> What is the difference between just playing the NWC2 file and opening it with the NCW Viewer and playing it from there? I'm not really seeing a difference.

I don't use the viewer much, but I believe it has the ability to change the global tempo by a percent. That might be an advantage when creating a learning video.

> Could the capture be uploaded to YouTube without being compressed?

YouTube should be able to handle it just fine. That's one of the things I like about YouTube. Give it just about anything and it'll convert as necessary. Although, it may take a while to upload if your Internet connection is like most and has a much slower upload speed than download speed.

> Is there a way to compress "in house" or does it have to be done online?

Sure thing! I'm pretty sure VLC is up to the task http://www.videolan.org/

> That's three things to try to coordinate: the capture button, the NWC play, and the mp3 play, and I'm struggling to get them in synch. Can anyone think of a solution or better way to merge the mp3 and the video?

I think you need video editing software at that point. I've heard good things about DaVinci Resolve, but I've not tried it.

Another vote for Audacity from me. It sounds like the popular choices are either Audacity for free or ProTools if you want to spend an arm and a leg.

And to my memory, the numbering was preserved from the old forum, but I could be mistaken ... I am 33 now, after all :-D

General Discussion / Re: Best wishes to all here
The Green Bay diocese did things similar to Mike Shawaluk's, but I haven't heard an end date up here.

PS. Mike, I had no idea that you were in Wisconsin. If you're ever up in Green Bay, look me up!

General Discussion / Re: Best wishes to all here
Here in Wisconsin, a 16-page order goes into effect tomorrow that shuts down all non-essential businesses. "Non-essential" is defined fairly broadly. It still allows restaurants to operate on carry-out only. And the tax office that I work at qualifies under the "financial services" category. It basically just puts teeth ($250 fine or jail time) behind what he's already asked of us. Unfortunately, the library where I work at is interpreting the order as a demand to send everybody home (we were already closed to the public, which is all the order requires of us), and since some jobs can't be done from home or can't be done fully, many people will be either out of work or employed at 50%. Of course being the IT guy, I am both able to work from home and asked to keep working until the very last zombie.

I will continue to keep all who are experiencing real hardship in my prayers. I am counting my blessings over here.

General Discussion / Re: Best wishes to all here
So far life goes on here in Green Bay. Lots of cancellations (including bus service- yikes!), but church is still happening and I will pretty much be needed at work no matter what. We are lucky to have three paper mills, so we are confident that toilet paper will return. I'm running Folding@Home on any computer I can to help fight. Prayers for everyone who has it much worse.

General Discussion / Re: Installing on new computer
In C:\Program Files (x86)\Noteworthy Software\NoteWorthy Composer 2\Setups , you'll find all the installers used to get you to this point. Copy this folder to a flash drive, install the installers oldest to newest, and you should be golden.

... though it looks like Richard beat me to it!

General Discussion / Re: Win10 problems in scrollboxes
I tested this on one of our Dell laptops here at work, and I can replicate the problem using the built-in trackpad. However, when I plug in an external mouse, it works as expected. To me, this points to a peculiarity with the trackpad.

General Discussion / Re: Win10 problems in scrollboxes
I wonder if it has to do with your tap-to-click settings... maybe play around with the mouse driver settings?

About all I can say is that it doesn't happen on Linux. The only little annoying bug we get is that tabbing through a dialog box moves the caret twice.

General Discussion / Re: Any plans to make this available for Chrome OS?
As luck would have it, we happened to have a couple of demo Chromebooks from Dell at work, so I decided to give Crossover a spin. I needed to get up to speed on the latest in Chromebook land anyway.

Getting NoteWorthy Composer up and running in Crossover was pretty slick. I just had to select it from the catalog and click through the installation process. There doesn't seem to be MIDI support, but I was able to use a sound font with the viewer. I didn't want to do too much experimentation on the clock, so I didn't try to get a soft synth working with NWC. However, Chromebooks aren't particularly good at sound, and the sound font playback stuttered quite a bit.

I also noticed that Chromebooks can run Linux now, too. They always could, but it used to require turning off some of the security. Now there's a Google-sanctioned way of running it. So it should be possible to install Wine and Timidity in the Linux environment (see here: https://forum.noteworthycomposer.com/?topic=6800.msg70514 ).

Both of these options require Intel Chromebooks. The Crossover route requires a Chromebook that supports Android apps ( https://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/chrome-os-systems-supporting-android-apps ). Both of these options also require a substantial amount of storage space, so if you do go the Chromebook route, I'd recommend getting more than the base 16GB of storage.

I hope that helps!

General Discussion / Re: Standard Scoring Rules
My piano teacher always said that you beam according to the beat. So in 4/4, you should get eight pairs ... unless you feel it in 2. Then you'd get four of them together. Seems like a good rule of thumb to me. But I don't have any official source to back that up!

General Discussion / Re: Playback problem in Linux
Well OK, you win. I've hacked together this little script

Code: [Select · Download]
killall timidity
timidity -iA &
env WINEPREFIX="/home/fjb/.wine" wine C:\\windows\\command\\start.exe /Unix "/home/fjb/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files (x86)/Noteworthy Software/NoteWorthy Composer 2/NWC2.exe"

The first line makes sure that we don't end up with multiple timidity process, since I can't figure out how to close timidity when the program exits.

The second line runs timidity and sends it to the background so that we can move on to the next line.

And of course, the 3rd has some Francis-specific path names.

General Discussion / Re: Playback problem in Linux
the shortcuts on Linux mint are much like on windows, where you get a one-liner for everything. I don't see any obvious way of running timidity first. But then again, I'm not up to a lot of fooling - it works, so I'm happy :-)

General Discussion / Re: Playback problem in Linux
Hey! I'm on Linux Mint 19, too. Didn't realize that 19.1 was out ... better get on that. Anyway, that's what I have to do, too. I have a timidity.sh file on my desktop that just has that one line in it. I run that and then open NoteWorthy Composer. When I'm done I close NWC and then close my terminal window.
