General Discussion / Re: New computer and MIDI problem
You've probably found the way the stop apps loading at startup ere now, but if not, right click the taskbar, select Task Manager, select Startup tab,  Right click on "Enabled' to toggle to "Disabled."  Or better still download the free Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns app. That finds more autostarting apps than Task Manager

General Discussion / Re: Read-only Tracks and Step-Play
This is not Step Play, but Tools/Options/Midi - "Play" dropdown includes "from insertion point" and "from current measure" in its selections. I use "from insertion point" - I find it a help when checking out a local area when I don't want to listen to the whole piece.

General Discussion / Re: PHP Version
Thank you for your clarification. I wasn't particularly concerned - I had already set Secunia to ignore the issue.

General Discussion / PHP Version
I ran Secunia PSI on my system just now, and it is reporting that the version of PHP installed in NoteWorthy (version 5.3) is out of date. I've checked and it appears that the current (issued) version is 5.4.15.
Is there a way a non-programmer like me could upgrade?
I think that I should wait for the upgrade to PHP to be included in NoteWorthy, but if someone has upgraded and can provided instructions, I'd try it out.
While I could copy the files that are in the PHP sub-folder, I assume there may be DLLs installed elsewhere, and/or registry entries. And php.ini may need alteration.
So I'm leaving it alone for now! I'm not aware that there are security issues with the older version.

Edit:-  A bit of further digging found this on the Secunia site:-

Description

A vulnerability has been reported in PHP, which can be exploited by malicious people to potentially disclose sensitive information.

The vulnerability is caused due to an error in the "soap_xmlParseFile()" and "soap_xmlParseMemory()" functions (ext/soap/php_xml.c) when parsing XML entities via SOAP objects, which can potentially be exploited to e.g. disclose contents of certain local files by sending specially crafted XML data including external entity references.

The vulnerability is reported in versions prior to 5.3.23 and 5.4.13.

General Discussion / Re: Windows 8
Yes, I'm running W8 Pro, and NoteWorthy runs as expected, both 2.5.5 and 2.51 beta 12. I have a Creative XFi Elite Pro sound card, and am using the SB XFi Synth A and B drivers as well as the Microsoft Midi Mapper. My reply in the referenced thread didn't confirm that the Midi Mapper and Creative drivers worked together, but they do. I have replaced my Toshiba laptop with a Dell XPS 14. I immediately replaced the pre-installed W7 OS in the Dell with W8 Pro, and NoteWorthy runs OK in that also. Sound output using the integrated sound with either the Midi Mapper or the MS GS Wavetable Synth is better than I expected, considering the speakers!

General Discussion / Re: Lyrics question: two different languages
If you can use your Armenian font for either the lyric font or one of the user fonts it may be possible to insert one of the verses as text. But text can be difficult to align with the notes. I have inserted repeats for other voices than lead using text, but it does require a lot of effort to get a reasonable appearance. As an aside I think you'd find it worthwhile to upgrade to the current release, even though, as Rick notes, it will not permit use of two different lyric fonts in the same piece.

General Discussion / Re: Playback in Windows 8
Apologies for the delayed response

I take that to mean that Win8 on a laptop works like WinXP. If you have a USB to 5 pin MIDI cord, NWC can be used with the internal synth and an external synth at the same time (discounting latency mismatches). Can you confirm?

I have never used an external synth, so cannot confirm.

Quote
Does that mean that under Win8, either the Creative drivers provide MIDI or Win8 provides MIDI, but not both at the same time?

I'm answering this from W7 (which is running an overdue backup) so am unable to check just now. I have a dual boot setup. From memory (a bit hazy!) I did have problems with either, or both, the built in synths when the Creative drivers were enabled, so I only use the Creative drivers. To provide the info I did, I disabled the Creative drivers, and enabled the MS devices one at a time to confirm that they worked.

General Discussion / Re: Playback in Windows 8
I have Windows 8 Pro on my computers, a self built desktop, and a Toshiba Satellite M330 laptop. Both play from Noteworthy. The laptop will use either Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth or the MS Midi Mapper.
I have a creative sound card in the desktop, so use their drivers. But the W8 inbuilt Midi Mapper and Wavetable synth play OK with the creative drivers disabled. So many people "love to hate" MS :-), hence all the negative reports.

General Discussion / Re: staff spacing
If you have a PDF editor you can print to PDF, and edit the PDF file  to move the staff (staves) closer together. Can be tricky if you do not have much space above/below the respective staff, as the PDF editor tends to select items that are close to, even if not in, the selection 'box'. I've also used this approach to move slurs to a better location, as well as changing stem length (e.g. in a chord with both up and down stems). If you print to PDF at high resolution / lossless level the printout is as good as the direct print from NWC.

General Discussion / Re: Aligning rest symbols
I set up verse numbers as a text entry.
Line up the insertion point with the lyric line to the left of the first note/rest. Insert text as 1. plus a number of spaces (4 usually works for me, but may need adjusting if first word in lyric has more than 5 characters, and standard lyric alignment rule is used. I use the same font for the verse numbers as for the lyrics.
If there are succeeding verses I use the down arrow to line up the insertion point with the next lyric line, insert text, (without spaces, and with 'Preserve Width' unchecked.
The numbers then are aligned vertically, and can be copied and pasted to following systems if desired.
This method doesn't require any padding of lyrics. And takes very little time to insert the numbers, once you've used it a few times. I've used it for hundreds of hymns, with the verse numbers at the start of each system.

Announcements / Re: NoteWorthy Composer 2.1 Beta 13
Why these are treated differently is beyond me

I experimented with stems in both directions to see how the dots were treated - not at all ideally, the dot on the upper note of the pair separated by a half tone is almost merged into the lower note head. Further to this it appears that the beam (and slur) for a pair of 8th note chords with both up and down stems is applied to the first inserted notes. No beam is applied to the stems of the opposing direction. In the included clip the first 4 chords had the up stemmed notes inserted first, the second set of 4 had the down stemmed notes inserted first. (I have always used layering to get beams to both up and down stemmed pairs (groups) of chords). This clip is from Beta 14.

....and while you're adding things to the status bar: how about putting the the current insertion point location (measure number) down there on the right, along with the active staff name? That's been on the wish list for a long time.....

This multiple document selector addition to the status bar is a very useful one. May I add a request for a "Save As" button - not necessarily a default, but one that could be added to a custom toolbar. Also a "Close" button that could be added to a custom toolbar.

Announcements / Re: NoteWorthy Composer 2.1 Beta 6
Beta 6 is now available from the top of this topic. It includes:

    [/li]
[li]Improved notehead alignment for split stem chords
    [/li]

Beta 6 aligns the up stem and down stem of a chord (where the notes are a half-tone apart) differently to previous versions. I've attached a .nwctxt file with some chords to show what I am seeing - but if this is imported into NWC 2 the stem are aligned. I haven't found a way to alter this behavior.

My OS is W7 build 7600

Announcements / Re: NoteWorthy Composer 2.1 Beta 5
Interesting minor point - but not new to this beta. I have a Microsoft Natural Laser 7000 mouse, and the horizontal scroll (wheel tilt) does not work if NoteWorthy Composer is run "as an administrator" (from a lower level account, including the 'built in'  Administrator account). OS is W7 build 7600. The wheel tilt scrolling works OK when using a full Administrator account (not the 'built in'  Administrator account).

Thanks Rich,
but I'm no closer to knowing what to do with nwc-conv.exe
Sorry, but I'm totally dense.
How do I "run nwc-conv -h "?

I've been hoping for a program which can convert to and from XML, Sibelius, Finale, etc.  Formats.

Apparently nwc-conv didn't get registered on my system - I had to navigate to the NoteWorthy folder (using the command prompt) and run it from there. Your system may be like mine in that respect. But as others have said it is just a new way of doing what has been available. Probably only really of interest to those who use scripts. It would have been nice if it would do what you hoped!

Announcements / Re: NoteWorthy Composer 2.1 Beta 5 - Inserting Text
Looks like you have Tools->Options...->Editor->'Smart Properties Insert:' enabled. Try unchecking the box.
I keep this disabled. Try it both ways to see what you like better.

Perhaps some of your Editor Options got changed during the upgrade. The 'Smart Properties Insert:'  option has been part of NWC since at least April 2000

Thanks, that was the answer - I hadn't checked to see if any of those options had changed. May have been in the install, or may have been an inadvertent click just prior to upgrading!

Announcements / Re: NoteWorthy Composer 2.1 Beta 5 - Inserting Text
Not sure if this is the right place to post, or whether it should be posted to the newsgroup - if so, which newsgroup?
I've just started using 2.1 beta 5 on W7 (build 7600). Inserting a text expression, either by the keyboard shortcut, or by selecting from the menu, now only shows the first tab - the placement and visibility tabs are not available until some text is inserted, the dialogue box closed, and then properties are selected.
This seems a regression to me - extra steps are required.

General Discussion / Re: 16th Flag alignment when layering
Hello mod.

For my edification, what are you trying to do here?  When I put four part harmony on two staves one voice on each staff is all stem up and the other all stem down, so getting the flags to line up is not an issue.

The hymns I have notated have multiple verse lyrics, so I couldn't afford the space that stem up/stem down takes. I also prefer the appearance of chords with stems in the same direction. I know there are exceptions - when notes of different duration form part of a chord. Sorry for the delay in replying - I've been away from the forum for a while.

General Discussion / 16th Flag alignment when layering
Some of the (4 voice) hymns I am notating require the use of layering. I am printing them showing treble and bass staves only. This means that flagged note stems lengths have to be adjusted to get flags to align. 8th note flags align correctly when the appropriate stem is lengthened, without any adjustment to the other layered note stem.

However, 16th flags do not align correctly when layering, unless "override stem length" is checked for the shorter of the pair of layered notes. The normal stem length for a 16th note shows as 7, but checking  "override stem length". without altering the value, actually shortens the stem slightly. This results in correct flag alignment with the other (lengthened stem)  on the layered staff.

I am using beta 19 on Vista 32.

Another anomaly that has appeared with beta 19, is that the selection highlight on selected areas/notes does not always clear when moving the insertion point (either with the keyboard or the mouse.  I installed a new Logitech Bluetooth MX 5000 keyboard/mouse combo at about the same time as beta 19 and this issue may be related to that, rather than the beta. The selection highlight clears after inserting a note, or other its\em, so is not serious.

Tips & Tricks / Re: Numbering Lyric Lines
I use a different method to apply verse numbers to lyrics. I prefer to see the verse number at the beginning of each system.
Peter's method is very neat, but has the limitation that it only appears on the first system (unless you copy the time sig and make it invisible, and add additional note spacing for subsequent systems, and also requires the verse number to be typed in the lyrics at the system break).
My method is to insert the verse numbers as text.
Insert 1. for the first verse, [using lyric text) add 4 spaces (or more, if you are aligning syllable using Standard Rules, and the first syllable on a system has more than 4 characters), select text, Preserve Width.
Then step down using the down arrow key the appropriate number of vertical spaces (4 for lyric text 11 font) and insert the next verse number. Do not insert spaces, or Preserve Width, for the 2nd and subsequent verse numbers. Select all verse numbers and copy to the beginning of subsequent systems.
This sounds complicated, but is very quick when you have used the method a number of times.

General Discussion / Re: vista
Yes, I have 2.08 running on Vista RC2, but haven't been using it extensively. So there may be issues I haven't discovered!

Yes, here's one - Help files have to be in an alternative Help file format, such as .chm, .html, or .xml. The WinHlp32.exe file is not shipped in Vista, because it doesn't meet Microsoft's current standards.
