General Discussion / Re: I've had it!
Some of the comments above regarding copying the fonts to the Windows FONTS folder will only work correctly with Windows 7 (and possibly Vista).  For users of Windows XP and earlier, the fonts have to be installed.  Open FONTS in Control Panel, click on File - Install New Fonts and select the location of the font files.  Check the box to copy the fonts to the fonts folder - should be checked by default.

Your Dell 3100CN is both PCL6 and PS compatible.  I would suggest installing the bog-standard HP Laserjet III printer driver, and attaching it to the same port as your Dell printer.  Try printing using this HPIII driver, to see if the line "darkness" is improved.  Very often, the very latest printer drivers from the manufacturer try to be too clever, and an older driver without all the bells and whistles often works much better.

I do have an authenticity ID for NWC2 which came by post in September 2008.  It is four groups of five characters.  Clearly this ID needs to be input somewhere - I can't see any obvious place to start the ball rolling from within NWC2, so if Noteworthy Online could give me any pointers I would be obliged.  I am quite happy using Regedit so there's no need to write me a .REG or .INF file!

Thanks for the reply, Richard.  I don't think I have had installation media since I originally installed NWC around 1994 (or was it 1996?)  Since then, all I have ever done is copy the entire folders over to PCs as they have been replaced/upgraded, and, in the case of Version 1, manually edited the NWC.INI file to register it to me - something which does not appear to be necessary in Version2

General Discussion / Upgrade refuses to install
Hi Everyone

I downloaded the 2.5 upgrade, but it refuses to install, stating that a properly installed copy of Noteworthy 2.1 was not found, or has been altered since installation.  I have copied the install file to the Setup folder under the program installation directory (as I am sure I did when I upgraded to 2.1) without success.  Would it be possible to have the install as a ZIP file so a manual installation could be carried out?  Or is there a registry key I can add?  Any ideas welcome.

PS.  The Viewer upgraded to 2.5 flawlessly by RUNning the install file from the link on the forum

General Discussion / Re: Why do you use Noteworthy?
Like MusicJohn, I found Noteworthy on a magazine cover disk - I think it was "Computer Shopper" some 17 years ago.  I tried it out on a piece my local Male Voice Choir was singing at a Christmas concert - the existing was hand-scored and difficult to read.  The members loved it!  I registered for the pricely sum of $39 and have not looked back since!  One of the members of the male voice choir I  now sing with uses Harmony Assistant to create MP3 files with the various parts emphasised.  Harmony Assistant can import NWC files, and any pieces I have in NWC he no longer needs to manually input.  One happy man.  I have used NWC on all flavours of Windows from 3.1 upwards, and NWC2 is currently installed on my Win7 Pro notebook.  True enough, one stave, one voice can be a bit tiresome, especially when only one or two "difficult" bars in a piece is involved, but that's what layering is for.  I have tried other score-writing programs, and every time come back to Noteworthy.  Even including the $15 (?) upgrade price, I would challenge anyone to find better value.  Thank you Eric, and a special thank you to the contributors on this forum who have written utilities and created add-ons, and who offer their advice and expertise.

If you can find a true-type font where the characters you require have been put below the 255 barrier then that font will work as required.  True enough, these fonts may well date back to Win95 and may take a bit of finding, but they are there.  I have found Arabic, Sinhalese, Punjabi, even Welsh, yes Welsh fonts (circumflex W & Y) with the necessary characters below the 255 barrier.

Hi Darryl, and welcome.

You say the piece starts off in C Major, modulates into A Maj and then back to C Maj.  Are you actually inserting the key sig. for C Major at the beginning, or, because it is the Open Key, leaving it blank?  It's a mistake I made (some 13/14 years ago IIRC) and went round in circles for a bit!

When I had XP (a downgrade from Vista (yuk!) not supported by HP) on my laptop, I had the same "problem".  Windows 7 on the same laptop does not show this behaviour.   I would therefore suggest it may be a driver problem, as the sound card driver for XP was a bit of a bodge.  Try getting the very latest drivers for your sound card from the PC manufacturers website if it is on-board or the manufacturers website for add-on cards

Do you still have access to your old PC?  If so, copy the fonts from the \windows\fonts folder on the old PC to a usb stick and then install them on your new PC.  Windows 7 may be using different fonts to the earlier version of Windows you were using.  Does NWC2 support the full Unicode range?  Or is it only up to CHR$(255)?  If the latter case then this could be another reason for the incorrect display.  Pehaps NWC Support could claify the last point.

I too learned the recorder, but at primary school at the age of 10.  Started off on the Descant (which I think has been referred to as the Soprano) which sounds an octave higher than the scored Middle C to A above the treble staff.  Then moved to the Treble recorder (which has previously been described as Alto)  In my experience this was also scored at concert pitch, with a range from F above middle C to D above the treble staff.  Sounded as per the score.  At the time I wondered why the two recorders started at different notes, which made swapping from one to another more difficult, but I now see that having one tune in different keys for the two instruments would have probably confused a 10 year old and put them off music for life!  Even now I have to think hard when scoring for brass and woodwind to make sure I set it in the correct key.

One point I would make (again) is that many of the USB-MIDI adapters draw quite a large current, and in some cases can cause the PC to fail to boot.  Also, some laptops do not have sufficient current availabel to drive these adapters.  In the first case, unplug the adapter before booting the PC, and in the second case, use a powered hub.

If Notewothy does not support Unicode, then characters above ASCII 255/ANSI 0255 cannot be used.  Many of the Windows standard fonts are in fact, Open Type, which hold the full Unicode mapping.  If you use a True-type font for the lyrics which does not contain characters over 255 *and* contains the Nordic-specific characters, then the printout should be correct.  You can see which characters the font contains by using the Windows Character Map (start-run type in CHARMAP hit enter)  Select the font and select Windows (Western).  If the required Nordic characters are not there, choose another font.  Holding the mouse over a character will give its code in hexadecimal.  The Windows Calculator (calc.exe) in Scientific mode will enable you to convert this to a decimal value which can then be entered with the ALT key plus zero and the decimal number (if you are using an English keyboard).  If you are using a Swedish keyboard, the standard keystroke for that character should display it.

Hi Everyone

For what it's worth, I have a UNO USB to Midi adapter.  This one looks like it is working (various lights flashing etc) on my notebook PC, but does not actually work, because it needs to draw more current than the USB bus can support.  It works OK in a desktop machine.  I have never got round to buying an externally powered USB hub to be sure that my initial diagnosis is correct, but, as neither the laptop nor the desktop will boot if the usb to Midi device is connected (before it boots and Windows loads), I am 99% certain it is correct.  If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to post.

Thanks, Lawrie and everyone for your input.  I cannot expand further on what you have said.  It is certainly a code page problem.  As far as the copyright symbol size changing after save, I wonder if this is due to copying and pasting.  Perhaps the point size when pasted is smaller than the default font size set in NWC???  When the file is re-opened the correct character is displayed in the correct font size???  Any further ideas?

For what it's worth the Copyright Symbol is located at ANSI 0169.  Open Notepad, hold down the ALT key to the left of the spacebar and key 0169 on the NUMERIC keypad (not the number keys along the top of the keyboard).  If you do not get the © symbol, check your Windows Regional Settings to ensure that Code Page 1252 (Windows ANSI Latin 1) is selected along with Code Page 10000 MAC-Roman.  If you do get the © symbol, but NWC still displays incorrectly, please post back and I will try to reproduce the problem on a virtual machine.  BTW, what version of Windows are you running (including service packs)

I think the basis of the question may have been to ascertain if "extended characters" - that is those over ASCII 127 would be correctly translated.  As (even) DOS supported characters up to ASCII 255 (or was it 254?), even though I have not checked it for myself, I would suggest that NWCTXT files will support characters up to ASCII254.  A quick and dirty check on the actual encoding is to try the British £ sign.  In the DOS character set this appears at character 156, in the Windows set it is at 163.

I hope I have understood the nature of the question correctly, and not thrown in a red herring!

Hi Everyone

I agree that this is a printer driver problem.  I have looked on HP's website, and they say this printer is PCL3 compatible.  Try installing the Windows-supplied HP Deskjet 550C driver.  Connect it to the same port as the C5280.  Try printing a Windows test page.  If that prints correctly, then all is well.  Try printing your NWC file.

Please post back and let us (all) know how you got on.

Certainly in the UK, "from pan to embers" would become "(jump) out of the frying pan into the fire".  I think the same expression may be used in Australia/New Zeland, but I am not sure about North America.  Can anyone enlighten me?

General Discussion / Setting Vertical Postion of Hairpins
Hi everyone

Is there a way of setting the vertical postion of the hairpin?  It seems to be fixed, so that if there are notes on ledger lines, the two collide.  I would prefer not to go back to cres and dim, so if anyone can help, I would be much obliged.

Yes, you are right.  Windows 2000 and XP in the GUI support Unicode.  However, I think I am right in saying that 2K uses the ASCII character set at command level, i.e. characters 32 to 255 (20 to FF Hex).  If I get a chance I will test this in a 2K box at work and post back.

Hi Everyone

Please remember that folder (directory) and file names containing spaces must be enclosed in quotes when working from the command line (which also includes batch files).  If the quotes are missing, the Command Interpreter sees the space as a delimiter, and what follows the space an argument.  Thus the folder C:\Documents and Settings is seen as C:\Documents (which does not exist) with and & Settings arguments.  Thus CMD.EXE reports file or directory not found.

This came in with Windows 95 and long filename support, and in my humble opinion something which Bill & Co should have fixed long ago!

Hi Everyone.

To throw in my two penn'orth.  I can only echo the comments already made.  Printers work in dots per inch, nowadays 600 or even 1200 dpi.  Windows converts this to pixels per inch, which is dependent on the screen resolution.  For example, 640x480 equates to 72 pixels, 800x600 96 pixels, etc.  Thus, the preview should not be regarded as totally accurate, but a reasonable representation of what the printed copy will look like.  I daresay someone will dig out his old Epson 9-pin, set the screen resolution to 640x480 and reply that the preview is not *identical* to the printout.  To that I will reply with the two words of the third sentence - Windows Converts!

General Discussion / Hiding Accidentals on Layered Staff
Is it possible to hide just an accidental when two staves are layered?  Although not technically incorrect, seeing an accidental on the first note of the bar deriving from the "lower" layered staff, and the same accidental against a subsequent note of the same pitch deriving from the "upper" layered staff can confuse some accompanists.  My current workaround is to remove the second accidental to make the printed score "correct" but this messes up the playback!  Anyone got any other ideas?

I've been a Noteworthy user since 1996, and have been waiting (less and less) patiently for NWC2's release.  Needless to say, I have placed an order, and await the e-mail to let me download it!  For fifteen dollars (about £8 sterling) it's a good investment!  I'll keep in touch with how I get on with it.

I have a similar problem with my brand new laptop - 15.4in WXGA, but in my case it is only the noteheads/stem relationship.  If I "zoom in" one click, the problem goes away.  My graphics card is a nVidia Geoforce and is set to 1280x800.  OS is Vista Home Premium which works, but needs lots of tweaks to function like XP!  So could it be the screen resolution?

Yes, Rick, I agree hindsight is a wonderful thing.  However, whether the USB port is on the motherboard or an add-on PCI card, it gets its power from the same place, the motherboard!  The simple solution was to attach the Uno USB-Midi device to one of the front USB ports and make sure it was unplugged on bootup!  As a footnote, I did try a powered USB hub (which in theory should only draw negligible power from the mobo) and this would not power the Uno device!  It was only a cheapo hub, so it could have been a faulty one.  I am an IT professional, and I went barking up the wrong tree at first.  Pity the poor end-user in the sma situation!

Hi Everyone

One quick point regarding USB to Midi adapters.  I have a Uno device, but I am sure other makes are similar.  After installing the drivers it worked perfectly both in and out.  BUT ....  Next time I started up the PC it hung just at the point the BIOS detected and spun up the hard drives.  So I stripped it all down, found nothing wrong, and put it back together again (without the USB to Midi plugged in) and it booted fine.  A reboot, and it failed!  One new 650w PSU and it still failed on reboot.  Eventually I unplugged the Uno device, and booting was perfect! 

There is a maximum power capacity of a USB port, 500mA if my memory serves me, and that is supplied through the motherboard.  The Uno device was drawing so much power that there was none left to get the hard drives (SATA) detected!  Once the machine was up and running, there was enough power available.  £50 worse off!  Anyone want a 400w s/h PSU?

Hi everyone. 

I had a similar problem when I installed Adobe Reader 8 on my machine (win 2000).  Uninstall did not work either.  Searching through Task Manager-Processes revealed some seemingly stray Adobe files running.  Ending these processes allowed ver8 to be removed (manually), and I reinstalled 7.0.9.  I still have the install EXE (of 7.0.9) if David, or anyone else needs it.  Please post back with your contact details if you would like it.

I too have been using Noteworthy since the days of 1.2, and well remember printing to a dot-matrix!  Picking up on the cost of colour lasers now, true enough, they are cheap to buy, but the cartridges and imaging drum are more than the cost of the printer!  For example, the Laserjet 2500 imaging drum expires (it's chipped) after 5000 colour copies, and is over £100 to replace.

I agree with Lawrie Pardy and Noteworthy Online that the most likely cause is the printer driver.  HP's LIDL (Lightweight Imaging Device Language) drivers in my experience are the worst offenders.  If yours is an HP printer, and is PCL3 compatible, as distinct from LIDL, try installing the HP Deskjet 550C driver.  This driver is natively available in all flavours of Windows from 95 on, and is the "lowest common denominator".  Failing that, make a nuisance of yourself on the manufacturer's support website!  If you would like to post back the make/model of printer you have, and the version of Windows, I will be happy to offer further assistance.

I have been using Noteworthy Composer for almost 12 years, and, as a Male Voice Choir member and conductor, I have often found the "one staff one voice" a nuisance.  However, layering does overcome this.  It is custom and practise for the upper voice to have all stems up, and the lower voice all stems down.  Thus, when inputting the notes on the individual staves, stave 1 (soprano) should be all stems up, stave 2 (alto) stems down, stave 3 (tenor) up, and stave 4 (bass) down.  Layer Staff2 over staff1 and staff4 over staff3.  Review the score, and if there and any 2nd intervals, unlayer and allow extra space to the note on the layered staff.  The same applies to accidentals (eg C# and A#) where the two # signs will collide.  By maintaining different stem directions for the two layered parts will avoid "double-tailing" of quavers.

Noteworthy does not directly support the sextuplet.  Two ways around it.  1.  Split it into two triplets.  2.  Keep it as a sextuplet, but process it in Noteworthy as if it were a triplet.  The only thing wrong in this second way of dealing with it is that it will have a 3 rather than a 6 in the linking bar.  It will play back correctly, though.
