General Discussion / Title misprint
The title of the song I'm working on consistently misprints: I first thought that the paper had slipped in the middle of the title, but it has happened subsequently in exactly the same way. In appearance, the title looks like the upper half has been sliced horizontally and tipped to the upper left slightly. The same page converted and printed from "Atlantis" (word processor) is fine.

Conditions: NWC2 directly to Epson 2200 via USB2 on letter size paper with WinXP. Both previews look fine.

General Discussion / Special opening decoration for SATB
The score I'm using to learn NWC2 has 3 soli, SATB and piano. NWC2 allows braces to mark the opening staves of the soli and the piano as grouped, but I can't figure out how to apply the special kind of bracket that's normally used for SATB and other quartets. There is a Sample file that has this decoration, but I've not been able to either import that bracket into my existing system nor to cut and paste from my score into the Sample file and then add the rest of the staves without destroying the bracket.

I've been putting it in for printing via a conversion to another fromat from NWC2's native format, but that is awfully clumsy and I'm trying to get as much out of NWC2 as possible before having to resort to workarounds.

Thanks for any help,

Frank

PS to Richard: it's the same file I sent you for the fix and thanks again for helping me with it.      FHK

General Discussion / Re: Preview and print problem
I wish I could just go to sleep and stop thinking of more tests!

I changed the paper size from 8.5x11 to 8.5x14 and saw no change in the staff, but then I went to SuperB and 11x17 and the preview looked normal, except, of course, for the 2 systems per sheet. This is with the printer on.

I bet you wish I could go to sleep for a while, too.

General Discussion / Re: Preview and print problem
Here's another data point: since I'm having some odd problems with my Epson printers, I opened NWC2 with the printer off just now and when I looked at the Preview with or without a lower staff the Preview image showed the missing staff.

Because of the printer problem, also very odd, seldom or never before seen by Epson, I then turned it on to check the NWC2 output image in Epson's Print Preview window and, guess what, the staff was gonzo!

This afternoon I spent time with Epson support completely removing all traces of Epson printer drivers and software from my system, then I reinstalled all that stuff, brand new and fresh. This had no effect on the printer problem, so I next removed all the most recent software, including NWC2 and only reinstalled it, leaving the other stuff out. Rebooted. No help for the printers.

All this before the above test was done, so it looks like something is interfering between NWC2 and Epson drivers (another model printer is affected with the same, rare problem, too).

Does this give you any hints on where to look for the error that might solve both at once?

Regards,

Frank

General Discussion / Re: Preview and print problem
Thanks, Tina, for the info, but the staff is "Standard", as are they all.

I've done a few more tests and find that, even if I add a staff below, which does show in Preview, that faulty staff still won't.

Frank

Just a thought. Check the staff properties 'Group'. I've noticed that when a staff is 'Hidden' it doesn't show in preview, even if it is still visible in the editor.

General Discussion / Re: Preview and print problem
I just did some more checking: first of all, the staff that doesn't print is in line with another layer that does print, secondly, it is not visible either in the NWC2 Preview screen, as noted previously, nor is it visible when NWC2 sends the page to the Epson print preview screen, so the whole staff simply doesn't exist at that level, even though it shows normally when viewed or edited in NWC2.

Finally, similar notes, 3 or more ledger lines below the staff do print when they were part of a higher staff layered with the one that doesn't print, so it's nothing like the print size going off the page.

General Discussion / Re: Preview and print problem
Let me clarify something: the part that's missing is not off the page, it is well above the bottom margin, about 2 inches. All of the printed song is quite compressed within the letter size sheet, the only margin approached is the right side and that's not cut.

General Discussion / Preview and print problem
I have a song with 14 staves and the bottom staff, the bottom layer of the piano bass line, does not print or show up in preview. I can find nothing in the staff properties that would prevent it from printing and it is in black type, just like the other staves, when not highlighted.

I tried adding another staff below, in case it had cut off the notes for reasons of space, but that didn't get the missing notes to show up in the preview, either. I also tried moving it up with another layered staff and making it layered with the one below, but it still doesn't show up.

Suggestions?

General Discussion / Re: Importing scanned scores
Does Sharpeye do any good with manuscripts?

If it got even 50% right, it would save me that much input. I have rather neatly hand-written manuscripts to copy into NWC2 and I can probably manipulate them as image files before sending to Sharpeye, but they're nothing like printed scores.

What file formats does Sharpeye accept from the scanner?

Thanks,

Frank

General Discussion / Re: "Insert Dynamic" bug report:
Thanks for all your replies, I now have a number of different ways of getting the job done. My report was just a comment on how "unreliable" the process seemed to me: I seldom got the expected setting back when Inserting and always had to jump around, making more keystrokes necessary.

General Discussion / Re: Converting score to jpg?
I've found a way to get a high quality copy of a NWC score into a graphics program (Photoshop) without the need for any .pdf intermediate.

I do the Preview/Copy to Clipboard then paste it into "Atlantis", a full-featured word processor/page layout program which has the ability to output an inserted image, like an NWC file on the Clipboard, to any of a variety of graphic file formats, including TIF and JPEG. From there on I can handle any of the forms in the file as graphics, making any modifications needed: rotation, stretching/compressing, moving, etc. As long as the notes are in the right places on the staves, the symbols and text that are above or below and whole staves themselves, can very easily be modified as needed without disturbing the notes/staves. If the parts on the staves need to adjusted, it's a bit more finicky, but can be done like any other graphics.

Besides that, since I added the font, Photoshop can now type in Boxmarks just like any other font and then manipulate them as graphics in a separate layer making adjustments even easier. Pure joy!

General Discussion / "Insert Dynamic" bug report:
When doing "Insert Dynamic" I found that returning to the command window the last selected notation (fortissimo, for example) didn't hold and neither did it default to a standard selection. Instead I never could predict what dynamic would be highlighted, so I almost always had to pull down the menu and reselect even when I tried to do repetitive inserts of the same dynamic to save strokes.

Quote from: David Palmquist [SNIP

Why complicate things by producing a jpg, particularly if it costs money?

David,

Because I wanted to edit the file in Photoshop to put in the hairpins and stuff the way the original author marked his manuscript, but I have since sprung for the latest version of NWC so that I can use NWC2 beta which is supposed to make stretched hairpins over the selected notes. That eliminates one need to take a publishable quality file out of NWC and into an external editor, it may still be easier to edit some mistakes in a program that doesn't tie things like Inserts to the notes themselves, since all I'm really interested in is the paper copy, not the playable file. Wouldn't that be nice? A way to separate printing from playing, giving each different options?

Now, if NWC2 just allows search and replace in Lyrics and Inserts, I'd be solving most of the remaining problems that I've encountered so far. Of course, I'd also like to determine the length of stems and exactly where ties and slurs go. . . .

"Try reducing the color depth of your monitor. For some reason, IrfanView (and some other apps) produce a higher resoulution jpeg (or tif) when in 16bit or 256 color mode (as opposed to TrueColor)"

16 bit is better, Rick, but still some staff lines, at least, have dropped out, so I'm still not getting publication quality output. I checked in actual paper print, not just in Photoshop which sometimes doesn't show fine lines due to sizing inconsistencies vs screen res.

"Easy deal!

From NWC Print Preview, copy each page to a placeable metafile. This works in NWC1 or NWC2, but you might find better results in NWC2. Warning: Do not use printer resolution higher than 600DPI, or you may choke the memory when you later open a metafile.

Obtain the free program "Irfan View." This program can open a metafile and export it as a graphic image of your choice, including JPG. But I think you will like GIF or TIF better."

. . . but when I do this from NWC 1.75b I have a very poor quality TIFF file when viewed with Photoshop, no matter what resolution I set on the printer (is there somewhere else to set res?)

General Discussion / Triplet placement
The default placement of a triplet is too high and the size of the font is too big, but I can't find anything that lets me change either.

It looks like the font size is governed by the font selected in Page Setup, but that will also affect all expressions and I only want to adjust the triplet. Selecting the notes in the triplet and hitting Properties does not bring up a menu to change the triplet.

Oh, also, the triplet location follows the direction of the stem and the manuscript I'm copying has them opposite (stem down, triplet above).

Suggestions?

General Discussion / Copy expressions from one staff to 3 others?
I'm transcribing the first of several manuscripts for a friend and I inserted all the notes and lyrics first, now I can't find a way to copy and insert the whole line of expressions from the first staff to the others and support hasn't answered in over a week.

The vocal music has essentially the same lyrics and expressions for all the parts, only the music differs. Should I have put in the expressions and lyrics first, with bars, duplicated the staff and then put the notes in?

Any suggestions?
