I’m working on a big band chart that had the following indication in the Guitar, Piano, and Bass parts: Basie Sound: Piano Player plays as if left hand is tied behind his back. Guitar and Bass strive to sound like Piano Player’s tied-up left hand! The Guitar part also has the following: Comp à la Freddie Greene Anyone have any idea how I’m supposed to sequence this? I’ve never heard of Freddie Greene [I’m not a guitarist or other rhythm section member.]. Does [did] Freddie have certain voicings for which he is [was] known, or certain rhythm patterns he typically uses [used]?
The tempo track is not visible. Go to File > Page Setup... Choose the Contents tab Check the box for Staff-1 to show the staff Click OK Hang on to your hat...
In the case of covering the left of the staff, you would only have to get the placement relative to the start of the bar correct once and then copy the character to whichever location was necessary.
If a line has a measure at the end that is so large that it is automatically moved to the next line, then the first-mentioned line has a "stretched" aspect to it, causing the placement of square to be different from other lines. I've had to make 6 (or 7?) different text items per page on some charts, and I had to give up using this method more than once because the space is too wide [sometimes ya need 1.3 spaces or 1.7 spaces to get it to line up just right, and then when ya print - it di'na work right!].
If you only have one staff, as for a separate part, then the left end of the staff remains open. If you layer it however, it shows the bar at the left.
Adjust your page margins such that the left margin is about 1 pixel outside your printers printable area.
Use some "Digital White Out" - set a highlight colour to white and place a character from a font like Wingdings that lets you overlay the left edge of the staff.
The first method wrecks the measure numbers that appear at the beginning of each staff. The second method needs absolutely perfect WYSIWYG to work (and we know that's not possible...).
It would be nice if we control over the Starting Bar, just as we have control over the Ending Bar: Staff Properties... General tab Starting Bar: Section Close Master Repeat Close Single Double Open (hidden)
Visual tab Style: Upper Brace Upper Bracket Upper Brace and Bracket Lower Brace Lower Bracket Lower Brace and Bracket Standard Orchestral Open
The last one would be for layered staffs for a single part. When layering was experimental (how long ago was that?), the left end of the staff remained open, but once the feature was integrated, a "left barline" was produced. I had printed a few parts without the left barline, and when I needed to print subsequent parts a year later, the left barline showed up - everyone noticed it (one woman even had "an episode that we never speak of...").
I didn't. I think they had been part of a smaller-valued grouping that I augmented using +, and removed one of the tripleted notes [Don't remember for sure - was about a month ago...]. The stems just came out like that, and stayed that way even after copy&pasting to separate staves.
I seem to remember reading about a chord-splitter utility available (at the Scripto?), but don't have time to search for it right now. You could also re-import it with Maximum single track chord size set to 2. Results won't be the best, but they may suffice.
...positive comments don't tend to get posted as often as negative ones... Well, here's a positive comment: I didn't like the fact that the old forum changed to Verdana because dynamics didn't look good anymore. ( mf pp ) Now with the choice of font left to us, I can do this: mf pp Trivial, perhaps, but...
The best improvement to the forum is that we no longer have to see outrageously [where's the spellchecker?] long strings of garbage and other juvenilia [sp?] all over the forum.
That being said, I would like to see improvements in the software take precedence over fiddling with forum upgrades.
Hi, Barry, I do have that arrangement...already sequenced in NWC1. There are missing parts, though (flute page 3, bari sax, trpt 1 p.3, trpt 2, guitar), so I had to extrapolate them (no score either!). I can send that to you if your address hasn't changed in a while, or if you post it.
I listened to your other charts; they sound pretty decent on my system. (I'm not about to fool around with soundfonts right now - VERY [glow=red,2,300][shadow=orange,left]hectic[/shadow][/glow] time for me...)
I have my pop-up stopper on and it is not a problem. I just look at the top of the page (when I remember...): Home Help Search Profile Personal Msgs Members Logout Home Help Search Profile Personal Msgs[1] Members Logout
Thanks, David. This is a good resource. I had gotten the 2001 version from a band director in the town of Ellington (no kidding), and is was of tremendous help back then. Now I am in a new band, and I am building the library from [glow=red,2,300][shadow=yellow,left]scratch[/shadow][/glow]...
I'm in the middle of rescoring Stan Kenton's arrangement of MacArthur Park for my group [original=5555, my group=5334], and the whole band sings. Gotta use the lyric line for lyrics - chords are entered as text. So...
Yup. We've got Caravan It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing) Do Nothin’ Till You Hear from Me Don’t Get Around Much Anymore Satin Doll Sophisticated Lady (We might have more, but they don't say Ellington on them.)
Thanks, David. That does clarify a few things. I would have thanked you sooner, but the little "new" icon wasn't showing; I thought no one had answered...)
This is the only thing that stops me from using your wonderful Chord Transposer utility. It works beautifully for those who use the lyrics line for chords, but I don't for this very reason (along with a few smaller reasons...). Keep up the good work!
I have a jazz band [swing band/dance band/jazz ensemble...] chart in which the drum part indicates "backbeat" at one point, "heavy backbeat" at another, and "soft drive" at another. What am I supposed to enter in these sections? I was once told that a backbeat has snare on 1 & 3 and bass on 2 & 4. Is that right? And what about the "soft drive" section? I'm clueless on that one.
...not terribly useful... More so than you think. I used this technique to create the "wah" effect of a trumpet playing with plunger. "Inventing" the technique was a complete guess, but it turned out so much better than I expected.
Why didn't you simply make them invisible (visibility=never) and leave them at standard height? Alternately, they could be placed on a [shadow=grey,left]hidden[/shadow] conductor staff.
In version 1, invisible rests do take up space (I assume you’re using version 2...) I just finished making an orchestral part with a number of huge rests [42 bars, 50 bars, etc.], and they took up too much space, so I made all but 8 or so into “grace rests,” which take up very little space. But getting back to your problem - you could pad out the needed amount with text; I usually use a space, set to Preserve Width, copied&pasted as many times as needed. I also use to “white highlight” quite often, but it offers less control over spacing.
They claimed to provide a page, but that turned out to be different from what was expected. That was a few years ago that I tried it. Maybe I should look in to it again...
The challenge with your way is getting the paired sets of tremolo signs to line up and leave no gap. What about using a sixteenth note on beat one and another on beat three (doesn't matter what's between - it will be hidden], with no heads on the notes [I know - not possible in version 1], and half-note heads inserted as text? (If this option is previously mentioned and I can't see it, please forgive - I'm [shadow=beige, left]groggy [/shadow] also...)
Yes, the "I" beam is what "I" mean. Today, all works fine (yesterday, I had another browser window open with a [glow=red,2,300]Flash [/glow] thingy in it that I was going to show to my kids - I think that's what caused the interference). Now if can just learn the new way to [abbr=Yeah, I know it's not a verb]acronym[/abbr]...
Lawrie, when I mouseover the initials, I just get a "highlight/cut/copy" type of cursor - I get no extra text. My system's been a bit weird lately - I'll try again after a reboot.
Josh, thanks for the apology - that's very "un-user111ish" of you. And my apology for going off on you.
Why is nobody helping me? I really would like to hear a fairground organ in NWC.
Well, I made an attempt to help you. Do you consider me a nobody? Also, I'm sorry that it took me 20 whole hours to get back here. You're acting a bit like "user111" - impatient and unappreciative.
...a tie across a key change... I've seen it lots of times. We are currently playing Bernstein's [shadow=beige, left]Symphonic Dances from West Side Story[/shadow], and I have a few in there.
Thanks for the upgrade to NWC Virtuoso! Additional question about logging in: If I go to my local Community Center to use the computer (having MAJOR trouble here at home these past few days [glow=red,2,300]GRRR![/glow]) and log off when I leave, will that log me off at home also?
