General Discussion / Re: MMR for coupled staves
Sorry, apparently I can't explain clearly.

Quote
- when I print the full score, then the MMR must be expanded as whole rest bars;

That's ok, perfect, no problem, NWC does it very well.

Quote
- when I print only one instrument that tacet for a while, then I want to see the MMR.

I mean: when I print (let me say: "extract") only one part.
For example, the violin alone or the piano alone in a violin and piano sonata.

If the extracted part that's silent for a while is formed by only one staff (e.g. violin, clarinet, flute...), no problem. NWC does it perfectly with all the needed MBRs.

If the extracted part that's silent for a while is a grand staff (e.g. piano, harp, guitar... whatever), then I want to see the MMRs, but that doesn't happen. That is: NWC thinks this is a multi-instrument score and handles it as the full score, so no MMR unless I force them with visibility = always.
Of course that's an overkill for when I want to print the full score...

Maybe later I'll post a couple of images.

General Discussion / Re: MMR for coupled staves
Sorry Warren but... does the boundary changes change something about the MMR? I can't see anytrhing different.

What I want is:
- when I print the full score, then the MMR must be expanded as whole rest bars;
- when I print only one instrument that tacet for a while, then I want to see the MMR.

By the way: nothing so strange. If you do that on a violin and piano sonata with a piano solo intro, NWC already works exacly as I described.
The problem is when the intro is for violin solo and piano tacet! (That is: when, like in my case, the instrument that tacet is a "grand staff" instrument)

Is it clearer now?

General Discussion / MMR for coupled staves
I notated a score for two harps (see attached file), then I tried to extract the two parts.
Extracting the harp I alone, I expected two MMR at the beginning.
Nope: the MMR are expanded.

Single staff printing and multi staff printing can't be of help.

The only way to have them showing up as MMR was to set their visibility to "always".
Inconvenient, don't you agree?

General Discussion / Re: MusicXML to Noteworthy converter

who didn't want to download the 25Mb .NET 2.0 Framework and the countless updates to it.

Indeed I installed .NET 2.0 (and 2.0 alone) only to be able to use your tool.
Should your old tool become obsolete (unusable), I for sure will remove it (.NET 2.0, I mean).

Due to its nature, it only takes a small change in either NWC or Windows for it to stop working completely. I'm not even sure it would work under Windows 8, I have no intention to test it, and the mere existence of the .nwctxt format renders the whole conversion process of the old app completely obsolete.

I fully agree.

General Discussion / Re: MusicXML to Noteworthy converter
Thank you, Nicolas, for both the old converter and the new one.
But I have the problem that, very often, I use NWC on my computer that has no internet connection.
You can understand that's quite inconvenient to have to move the files back and forth between computers in order to get access to your converter.
Isn't possible to have a version "downloadable"?

General Discussion / Re: Playback in Windows 8
My daughter's new laptop has win 8 (even if probably not for long...) and I installed NWC in it.
There is the usual Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth.

General Discussion / Re: Adding staves during a repeat
Lawrie, I don't see any advantage to approximate the muting on/off with (hidden) dinamics instead of inserting an (obviously hidden) "volume = 0" and "volume = 127" MPC.
Or, if you prefer, "expression = 0" and "expression = 127" MPC.
1062
General Discussion / Re: Adding staves during a repeat
One trick is to set to 0 the volume of the parts that must be added later, then using special endings to turn the needed voices volume up.
I did it myself in some cases and I remember having seen it in some pieces in the scripto, but at the moment I can't recall exactly where.

General Discussion / Re: Margins
I use so rarely Ctrl+Insert and Shift+Insert that I forgot to try them.

Two dots? It's a colon! ;-)
1064
General Discussion / Margins
In the "page setup" margin input edit boxes, copy and paste are not allowed.
Why?

And then the decimal dot must be... well, a decimal dot.
As you know, here in the old Europe many (me too) use the comma.

With few exceptions, in my programs I allow both characters as "decimal dots" in input and use the locale (courtesy of windows :-) for the display.

I don't know what I did originally where I couldn't see the notes scrolling.

Probably you selected a short staff. I mean, one that ends before the others.
Since the reference for scrolling is the selected staff, if the staff ends then the scroll stops.

Instrument Trees / Re: Using Instrument Trees
Said in ther words: you should not choose arbitrarily the itree you prefer.
You must use the itree that matches your synth.
If your synth is General MIDI compliant, as many today are, you must use General MIDI.
If it's MT-32 compatible you must use MT-32.
If the mapping of your synth is not present in the default itree you can make that one yourself (and, possibly, publish it here).

But that's only a help for you as a composer so you can choose your synth instruments by name.
As Rick said, changing itree doesn't change anything in the playing.
In special mode, do not expect that other casual users get the sound you choose unless you stick to general MIDI.

General Discussion / Re: Optional warning when closing
Now I remember having seen it...
Thanks.

But there is a catch: "number of unsaved files".
My files were not unsaved.

I mean something like firefox: "you have x pages open: do you want to close them all?"
Of course, something like that is good to be optional.
1068
General Discussion / Optional warning when closing
I'd like to have a (optional) warning when closing NWC with more than one score open.
It happened to me that, while listening to a score, I looked at another. Then, having finished with the latter and wishing to close it, by mistake I closed NWC.

Well, of course I could be smarter but I think it's too late... I think I can only become more stupid! :-)

User Tools / Re: Trilli
Version 2.00: Deeply reworked and extended

The most notable extension is for trills of arbitrary length, thanks to a trick suggested long ago by Rick-the-wizard.

A known problem is that, in long trills, if you have notes (a chord) other than the one trilling then those notes are visible but don't play.
1070
User Tools / Mordent
Following the same line as my other tools, this one inserts the mordents.
Adding the parameter "r" or "-" inserts the reverse mordent.
Assumes: font User1 = MusikDingsxxx

General Discussion / Re: M.D.C.
Bill, I found it in Mozart: horn quintett, one of the internal movements.
But what relieves me the most is "it's not a standard abbreviation".
That's already consoling. ;-) Thank you.
1073
General Discussion / M.D.C.
At the end of a movement I found the acronym M.D.C.
What does it means?

My best guess: "movimento da capo". (Do you need translation? :-)
1074
User Tools / Re: Trilli
Update:
Corrected the default stem orientation
Corrected the case of rest chord when the rest is not visible
Added parameter "n" or "-" to avoid adding grace notes to actually execute the trill

1077
User Tools / Trilli
A small tool to automatically add trilli.

Assumes: font User1 = MusikDingsxxx

Once again, the trillo can be interpreted differently depending on the period, the composer etc. but I think this is a good starting point.
Of course, you can always do it by hand or use a hidden layedered staff, if you prefer...

Warning: exceeding 15 consecutive grace notes makes odd effects. NWC oddity.
As usual, Rick got a workaround, but it's not so easy to automate.
1078
User Tools / Turns
A small tool to automatically add turns (and reverse turns).
Adding the parameter "r" or "-" inserts the reverse turn.

Assumes: font User1 = MusikDingsxxx

Yes, I know, the turns can be interpreted differently depending on the period, the composer etc. but I think this is a good starting point.
Of course, you can always do it by hand if you prefer...

User Tools / Re: A better Arpeggiate Chord
A still newer version.

I spent a few moments learning some PHP and then I updated it making some little bug fix and adding more automatic features:

Allowed arpeggios also with 8th notes
Allowed arpeggios also with restchords
Only mark the arpeggio if note duration is < 8th (no grace notes)
Added a little spacer
No arpeggio on a tied chord

General Discussion / Re: Measure numbers
Obvious answer: measure 14 from the beginning.
Not necessarily the number that could appear on the printed page, just the number that appears in the ruler in the editor.
Nothing new: the very same thing that happens with page numbers in in Word or in pdf.
1083
General Discussion / Re: extension lyric words
Trying to get an answer for Lorenzo I made some experiments with "Underscores shown as spaces".
It's a thing I didn't touch since a long time.
...and I found no difference with that option checked and unchecked!
Am I overlooking something?
1084
General Discussion / Re: Measure numbers
Much better and simpler: a bar line with a fixed and absolute bar number.
If you use an "offset", each time you modify the number of measures of the first movement you must change the offset of all the others.
1086
General Discussion / Re: Long measures
As I wrote:
Quote
The solution is to insert by hand some bar lines hidden and bar-count excluded.

Yes, it works, but you must insert it by hand and must be done in all the staves.
1088
General Discussion / Long measures
When dealing with a lot of 64th, usually the measures tend to become quite long.

NWC is Procustean: it simply truncates them!

You must be very careful for, sometimes, even passing to the landscape paper orientation is not enough.
The risk is to be forced to print in a very small size, difficult to read.

The solution is to insert by hand some bar lines hidden and bar-count excluded.
But that's very tedious!

The same comes with (long) text.
It would be a good idea to add some form of automatic wrapping.

Why is the second flat so far on the left?
1090
General Discussion / Measure numbers
Sometimes I like to have all the movements in a single NWC file.
Very feasible, even more since the limit on the number of objects has long been removed.

The problem is that, in this case, the measure number is always from the beginning of the score while I'd like to have it reset at the beginning of each movement.
1093
General Discussion / Lyrics swap
I have a staff with two voices, tenor and bass, and I use two layered staves.
Each staff has its own lyrics line.
When I overlay the two staves, one of the two lyrics lines is automatically shifted so as to have both lines readable.

In my case, no matter which staff comes first, the lyrics are such that the bass lyrics is always the first (highmost) line than the tenor one.
Swapping the order of the staves doesn't change anything.

I'm sure I'm overlooking something stupid.

General Discussion / Re: Staccato dot too close to stem
Even better: use the "Insert Noteworthy Composer text clip" button, the one with the "2" at the left end of the row.

General Discussion / Re: Webpage to create a guitar chord
Thank you for the explication.
I never used "Guitar.htm" and I was very puzzled.

P.S. Just fixed the problem with the checkbox.

Well, I simply suggested to have a caption for the checkbox.
I still can't see any.

General Discussion / Re: Webpage to create a guitar chord
Warren,
I downloaded your page to use off-line.
When I tried it I got "Guitar cookie missing, need location of chord text".
What does it means? What's looking for exactly?

N.B. I suggest writing "demo" on the relevant check box.
I was wondering what was it for...
