Title: Not really NWC, but on music theroy
Post by: Andrew W. on 2005-06-19 12:24 am
I'm pretty decent on music theroy, but I don't know what the names of these chords are, and don't know where else to ask this question.
The first chord is: DFAD which is Dm
The second chord is: DFAC#
The third chord is: DFAC which is Dm7
The fourth chord is: DFG#B Which I think is Ddim7 (not sure)
Can someone tell me what the name if the second chord is, and the fourth if I'm wrong?

You are correct with 1,3 and 4.

2 is a Dm(maj7)

I usually right this as Dm (nat7) with nat replaced by the natural sign.
But then I've seen Dm(#7) as well.

Dm (nat7) and Dm(#7) can be vague/confusing.
Stick with Barry's first suggestion, Dm(maj7).
The fourth chord, DFG#B, is more likely G#°7, especially if it comes right before an A chord.

Hmm, I would have called no.4 Ddim6 or perhaps Ddim(add6)

Whoops, I forgot something.
What's the name of the chord with the B-flat in it?

Ddim(b6) or maybe Bb(min7)/D would be my call

I'm no expert, but I believe that the name of the chord is dependant on the key that the piece is written in.

I'm no expert, but I believe that the name of the chord is dependant on the key that the piece is written in.

Good call DGF,
I believe that would make:
DFAD...... = F6(no5)/D .... instead of.. Dm
DFAC#.... = F6+ ............ instead of.. Dm(maj7)
DFAC...... = F6/D ........... instead of.. Dm7
DFG#Bb... = Bb(min7)/D .. instead of.. Ddim(b6)

In the original question we didn't have the key sig. so the original assesments made were wholly reasonable.

Corrections anyone?

Ouch!

DFAD...... = Dm ............F6(no5)/D makes no sense
DFAC#.... = Dm(maj7) ...F6+ makes no sense
DFAC...... = Dm7 ..........F6/D makes not much sense
DFG#Bb... = Ddim(b6) ....Bb(min7)/D you probably mean Bb7/D, but the chord is
DFG#B, not DFG#Bb (see the little n before the 0?).  The last chord is
DFG#Bb..... = German augmented-sixth chord in D minor.

I believe we are in D minor here, not F Major.
What's going on in the bass?

why is musical theory so complicated?
Title: Re: Not really NWC, but on music theroy

music theory is not so complicated.
If it seems to be so, then the approach is wrong...
Consider what the writer wanted to say.
Determine what is transient and what is not.

Why is there here a D at the bottom of all the chords? Certainly not because we are in F major: we are in D minor. And sometimes, the "main" tone may be different. This is called a modulation. We are not in 13th century no more... A piece starting in E may change to A later, then G, then E again, for example. In theory the last chord should be in the initial tune, but even this is not sure nowadays.

HTH though... :)

PS. knowing all the intervals help to name chords :)

Hi Allen
Dm?, D minor? - DOH! of course it's Dm.  [note to self - be awake _before_ making a fool of one's self  :) ]

Even so, 6th chords, along with inversions, are quite valid in their correct context.  (maybe even here if we had the rest of the work, but not likely.)

I'm not sure what you mean by "makes no sense" - I guess different "schools" have different practices/traditions.  E.G. Where I come from the + is commonly used to indicate an augmented chord.  I know others sometimes use it in place of # when adding a #11 for instance.  Kinda like Crotchet = 4th...
As for (no5): it means what it says - F=FAC, F6=FACD, F6(no5)=FAD (which is, of course, the same as a first inversion Dm [Dm/F]).

Yes, I did miss the little n...  I even copied and pasted onto a staff and I _still_ missed it... (can I blame my glasses?  Please?)

Andrew,
Why don't you just give us the bass line for this?

Harmonic structure has its roots in figured bass.
Its not called that for nothing.

I thought the differences between a 6th chord and a 13th are these:  (I'd be pleased to find out what's really correct!)

tonic - both chords must have, at least by implication
third - both chords must have
fifth - can be implied for the 13th - mandatory for the 6th (else it's an inversion of a plain triad)
seventh - mandatory for the 13th - must not be present for the 6th; this note is the most important for deciding if it's a 6th or a 13th
ninth - optional for the 13th - if included in the 6th, it becomes a 6/9
eleventh - optional in the 13th, but more likely it's going to be a different chord altogether - very rarely found, if ever, in a 6th chord, where the chord would probably be [abbr="labeled" if your variety of English doesn't double the "l"]labelled[/abbr] "X6+11" or "Xmaj sus4" or "Xmin sus4" or some other gibberish that leaves you wondering what's really going on.
thirteenth - mandatory for both chords, but called the "sixth" in the 6th (surprise, surprise).

This is based on the generally well-accepted premise that most chords in "western" music are built on consecutive major and minor thirds.

I understand that local custom might vary, and if that's working, I wouldn't want to mess with it!

Lawrie,
The answer to "can I blame my glasses? Please?" would depend on whether you wear or drank them.

This is just something to I want to improvise on. I don't really have a consistent melody yet. Unless someone else can come up with one.

Now that we have a bass line...
I changed the b-nat to a c-flat. Seems more readable to me.
A c-nat in measure 2 would seem more than a "courtesy".

If you don't consider the top line a melody, I would think measures 1-2 best.
But I just see this as a chromatic descent with one chord change as in measures 3-4.
