Title: midi keyboard trouble
Post by: Sasha von Dassow on 1998-08-31 04:00 am
This is probably MIDI problems for Dummies #1, but how do I get NWC to actually notice and let me use my keyboard? I'm running WIN98 on a p166 with AWE64 through my gameport. I've tried going through control panel/multimedia/add new instrument on various things- midi mapper, AWE64 330 MIDI out, and NWC doesn't let anything happen- it gives me messages like "program won't open properly" when I try to open anything but AWE64 330 out, but I still can't get it to hear my keyboard. Neither the keyboard instructions, WIN98, nor NWC info or FAQs/newsgroups/forum seems to hold the key to unlock the magic door for me. The keyboard used to work but I always had trouble figuring out how to jigger things the right way anyway, so can somebody help? thanks.

Playing your MIDI keyboard into your computer is a "MIDI In" function, rather than a "MIDI Out" function. You need to make sure that your cables are properly connected, your soundcard drivers are properly installed, and that NWC is properly setup for recording. You setup NWC using Tools, Options, in the Record tab. Help is available from that page.

Thanks for the info- after gnashing my teeth some more I checked the cable connections (again) and discovered that the Y-cable to the gameport had gone bad- to many games played by my son, I guess. The lesson is: check the cable connections just like everybody says to do! Thanks for the time- Sasha

Sounds like the same maddening problems I had when setting up NWC. Someplace in NWC (I think) there's a little sentence that says something like "MIDI IN should connect to MIDI IN, but sometimes it's MIDI IN to MIDI OUT. At any rate, when I switched the cables to be MIDI IN to MIDI OUT, my keyboard was recognized! Good Luck!

3 days later and every new driver known to man - a midi IN to the midi OUT port and WALA - it works!  God I am stupid!
