Well re-reading your request, I should have said -6 since you wanted the pitch lowered.
-6 would have bought the staff to 3 sharps but a lower pitch than your current 3 flats. Since there are 12 semitones in an octave, 6 up would go higher whilst 6 down would go lower. So if you have already made that change, doing another transpose of -12 will keep the key the same but lower the staff by an octave.
The relationship between one key and another can be said to be the number of semitones difference. (There is something called the circle of fifths - but not going into that deeply)
Consider the attached diagram (not mine - just Googled it for this answer !) . Each division is a semitone so you can count how many semitones you need to raise of lower the current key to get to the key you want. In NoteWorthy, it is better to force accidentals before transposing. Also, do not try to manually change the key signature since NoteWorthy will do it for you when you transpose.
In the transpose screen, there is also a tick box called "update staff play back transposition". For a simple transposition, this box should not be set - It is mainly to do with transposing instruments - not getting into that here!
So looking at the diagram, you can see that if you wanted to go from a key with 2 sharps in it to a key with 2 flats, the number of sections between those to keys is 8 going clockwise and 4 going anti-clockwise.
So in the NoteWorthy transpose screen, entering 8 semitones will raise the pitch to two flats (Key of Bb) whilst entering -4 will lower the pitch to the Bb key below the original 2 sharps (D key).
Hope this helps
Hi Rich,
What code is the third inner sign, for example 2 flats, the starting pitch is D, and what is Bm.
Hello, When I recall back to like 10 years ago when we 're in Indonesia, it seems that there is like a digital way to enter the note?, by make a copy of the song book, then we scan it at oou printer scan, than it will send like a fax to our Notewothy composer at our laptop. Anyone knows about it?, because this is my problem now entering manually the note.
Changing the starting pitch is easy like explained here in this forum on how to transporse by Richard.
With some singing in ("warmup") before a performance, all the "singing muscles" relax, and it is then possible to reach more notes - like in sports Extending the range by a third is possible - no big deal, just "oiling your voice" a little before the performance Then, you might not have to shift the song up or down!
This is good suggestion Mueller, as you can see here, https://www.youtube.com/embed/HiUrHrH6U_c?start=1135&End=1237 I am the very left if you're facing video, and the soprano the lady in my left is not relax which was affecting her voice, because we did not practice before performance. So thank you very much for your suggestion.
We did practice before. The problem maybe after we are in the pulpit my friend was not relax... we have to admit, we are not a professional. You can imagine we immigrated from a developping country to the US, and we have to adjust with our environments, but I said to my friends, let's do singging, to help us more healthier and slowing our grwoing old. 'Your explanation on transporssing is a good way, coz I can put in the Noteworthy if I lower or higher in 1 or 2 semitone.,
Anyway what do you mean by lower or higher one third, is it one third of an octave?
A good rule of thumb for general congregational singing is to aim for a soprano line that stays within the range from middle C (C4) to the C above (C5). In truth you have a little leeway here (say Bb3 to D5), but if you aim for the range C4 to C5 you shouldn't go far wrong.
Thanks Lawrie for your explanation, what do you mean by middle C (C4) to the C above (C5), does it mean we lower or higher on the reange of 4 semitones?. What I do according to Richards' explanation, if I lower in the Soprano let's say 2 semitone, in Alto, Tenor and Bass I lower them in 2 semitone. Am I right ?.
So looking at the diagram, you can see that if you wanted to go from a key with 2 sharps in it to a key with 2 flats, the number of sections between those to keys is 8 going clockwise and 4 going anti-clockwise.
Thank you Rich for your explanation, I know now how to lower or increase the tone. The reason I asked you how to lower it to 3 Sharps, is because when we practice it, the soprano said it is to high, she is a girl, she said for men maybe it is not high, but for women it is high she said.
Then when she was singing the tone in number NOte which is 5 ( sol), I tried to see my starting pitch theory which I was told by my friend, see attached. I tried to blow my chrome pitch tuner, the basic tone the lady( soprano likes is under A=1 (do), we call it "do" which is in the staffs is for tenor, and when I see in the starting Pitch A=1 is under 3 sharp, while our song book, the song is under 3 flats, that is why I asked you how can we make it to 3 sharps.
But in fact when we sang it it is too low so it was not so good, so I better use your suggestion. So I should have had just to lower it to 1 semitone. Lower it to 6 semthone is too low.
When we see us singing here it was too low, not sound good. ( I do not know how to copy a link jump directly to specific time start, where you can see 2 men and 2 women, they are seniors singing) https://www.youtube.com/embed/HiUrHrH6U_c?start=1135 What is the best way to adjust the pitch to the capability of the Soprano, do you have any suggestion?
Thank you Richard, I will try to understand first what you are explaining, because English is not our mother tongue, but since we immigrated from Indonesia to the US 8 years ago, we have to learn English.
I will let you know my progress, for the time being we are keeping Sabbath now.
In the semitones box, select 6 (+6 that is) . Make sure the Update staff box does not have a tick in it.
Click on OK
Could you tell me what is the basis to put +6?. I never take music shool, just self study, and my friend said, if 3 flat is A=1, when I use my chrome fulit 3 Flat is A=1 for 1st tenor, but when I changed like you said + 6. it is higher in pitch than I expected. That is why I ask you what is the basis of putting 6.
I have keyed in the notes of a song, when trying to sing with it, I feel the pitch is too high, so I want it to be 3 sharp instead of 3 flat. To change the keysignature is easy, but how about the notes. Is there any fast way to change them on the staffs.
Hello, When I filled in the text of each voice/staff, then I wanted to make a song sheet by layering 2nd staff to 1st staff and the 4th staff to 3rd staff, and I do not want to see duplicate lyrics, so I just want to keep lyrics of the first staff,he problem is how can I put the needed lyrics of the 3rd or 4th staff for certain section (see attached marked), so that we can really make it look like the song sheet.
On other thing what is the best instrument that I can assign to 1st tenor, 2nd tenor, Baritone Bas, so that when the four of us listening, we can easily recognize how does it sound for our own voice. In Indonesia we have to translate the note into number, then we sing it like do, re me, pa, sol las si do. But here in the west, we just listen to the software.
Regarding the bar length, I don't see any problem. Maybe you missed the augmentation dots?
See the third measure, it is the 1/8 note rest symbol, so the measure counts as 2 and a half beat, not 3 beats per measure. Anyway what did you mean by it is 1/8 not mirrored.
On other things, how can I add the Bible verses on the top of the staft/part of the title.
We have the old song in our dialect (Batak), but when I tried to enter the note in the software, it looks the followings are weird: 1. the rest sign of the 1/8 note is different look 2. the time signature is 3/4, there should be 3 of 1/4 note in a measure, but in many measures if you see in the staff, the are only 2 1/2 value of 1/4 note.
Attached is the note in question, sorry if I do not know how to say it in English
I think the best way is to use NWC before recording the output with Audacity.
Select the notes , press Ctrl-E for the notes menu, then tick the Mute box.
You can also mute entire staffs with the Mute menu. Sel;ect the staff with F2.
My prbolem David in singing I am not so good in tempo. I can sing each voice 1 to 4 even by nature, not follwing the note, but my weakness is in correct tempo/beat. This is what I tried and then combined the 3 voices, and not really good. Sorry the song is in our Batak dialect, not even in Indonesian. You know Indonesia has about 300 dialects, one of the is Batak which is my dialect. As that is my mother tongue, so even though we llive now in California, we love to sing a song in our dialect, just for fun, it is not so good. https://youtu.be/oNRFQvOqBtM
You will undoubtedly need to adjust each track's starting point to get them to sync up.
Thank you Lawrie, that is what I did, but it is very difficult to adjust the starting point to get them to sync up. In aduacity I am trying to find the menu that can snap the certain point of the time line. Move it and snap it to : 38 s
Hello, Based on your experience what is the best application/software that can remove the instrument completely. Because what I did is trying to sing for each voice on each staff with the piano, then I want to remove the music then I combine the 4 voices to procude the quartet in acapella. I try to use Audacity, but the result is not good.
Just insert a bar at the end of each staff, with Style = 'Local Repeat Close' and Repeat Count = 3.
Thank you Opagust, I will try to make as you explained. I am too a moderate singer Opagust, We just formed a Senior Male Quartet at Loma LInda Indonesian SDA church in California. So we like you said, 1st tenor, 2nd tenor, Baritone, Bass. Could you post the link of your youtube or Video?> I like to hear your Male singging group.
Opagust. I play yours and it comes to my mind we put different instrument for each voice. Do you know what is the name of instrument that we can assign for Soprano, and different instrument for Alto.. and so forth, so that they can listen and follow their voices easily. Thank you.
I just ran it on the third (green) staff of the song 'Joy to the world', which is a song we sing in our choir. You can see the result in the attachment.
Thank you Opagust. It is good. How can you make the color of the active staff and how can we make it singing the whole verses. Is there any facility to highlight only the active staff one?.
Hello, for Indonesian people, although we have been living in the USA, it is still easier to learn songs in our church, with singing it in Number notes. I can key the number in the lyric place but I have problem if the notes are sharps or flats, I have to onward slash for the sharp and back slash for the flats for numbers. Any idea how can I do it? for exmapler 1, I have ro onward slash it for the sharp, and back slash fro flat. Also I have problems in making the 1 short line or 2 short lines for the caps of 1/8 note and 1/16 note.
1. Use the VerseNumbers.ms plugin to get easy verse numbers. There are a number of options for complicated situations, but the default settings should give you verses starting at number 1. Look at the SAVEQUEN.NWC sample file for an example. 2. If you click the glasses icon (Viewer Mode), it will hide the oval Melismatic.nw (and VerseNumbers.ms) text markers. 3. On the Lyrics setting page, adjust the Offset to change this.
Thank you Mike for your explantions. It helps me very much.
Hello, I have several questions: 1. how can I make the verse no. and lyrics start look left justified like in the song sheet that I posted before. Attached is my keyed lyrics. 2. Because I I want to screen recording it and posting it in my youtube channel, how can I make the word " Melismatic " disappeared. 3. how can I make it the highlighted area of the 2nd staff not hit the lyrics the staff of the above staff.
You can use the properties dialogue of the fermata to add a delay in 16th note time values. WARNING: only apply the delay to one staff. If you add it to matching the fermatas in each staff the delays sum and it'll be longer than you want.
Thank you Lawrie for your enlightening me. What about the tempo variance at the end, I tried to enter ritardanto, but it can only wirte ritard., I want it to write like in the song sheet " rit.", how can I make it, and should we only put it on the 1st staff?, I have 4 staves to make. Also the tempo of qaurter not = 100. Should I make it in every staves?. Or what is the guide line that we should make for every staff or just in one staff.
Thanks to all of you for your explanations. It helps me to key in the note in order to look like the song sheets. But how can we key in fermata in order to have a delay, because when I play it there is no delay.
Thanks to H.M. that attached the German Songs, it reminds me when I was in Indonesia 50 years ago, I learned German language, but only 1 year and I forgot now, but I still remember some now. I live now in California with not young age anymore.
I like to sing, although not so good, and my weakness in tempo/beat, although I can sing naturally from soprano to Bass. As you can see in my youtube channel here, if we sing quartet, my part is 2nd tennor.
Again thank you very much to all of you, please continue helping me, although with my broken English, coz in Indonesia we seldom speak English. Just if you have a leisure time you can watch my youtube channel here: https://youtu.be/XlIeG7e04L4
Hello, I have 2 questions: 1. What cleff is this, because I want to key in the notes into Noteworthy composer.
2. I am not a good singer, but we try to have a senior quartet (old people), and for the first note, how does it sound, I want to use the pitch pipe tuner a Precise 13 note Chromatic C-C scale, as we see the song sheet, the key signnature is 4 flats. How can we use my pitch pipe tuner in order to know the pitch of the 2nd tenor first note. I tired to google but I did not find.
Hello, When I layered staves Tenor with Bass, since the value of the note is not the same, the words look overlapping, is there anyway to make the color of the word "white" in one staff lyrics, so that when we layer it does not look different. See the attached.
[You can create your four lines of lyrics in one staff using Lyric 1, Lyric 2, Lyric 3 and Lyric 4 tabs in the Lyrics menu. This may cause problems if the words begin with note changes that differ in that part (i.e. trebles' words may not begin at the same beat as the bass lyrics.).
Thank you David, that is what I did. and looks ok.
If you have chosen "allow layering" in Page Setup, when you look at Print Preview the staves will be layered IF the upper one has been set to "layer with next staff" in Staff Properties (F2).
You won't see this in the Edit window unless you've also selected "allow layering in edit mode" from either the View menu or the icon in the menu bar.
Thank you David... You are owesome, It works now for me. Frank
Can anybody help me how to make the part of the lyrics of bass and tenor, look like the attached?. I want to put all verses lyrics in each staff, Soparano, Alto Tenor and Bass, and when I layer it, I want it looks like the song sheets attached. But also I have a problem now, I do not know why I can not layer it.
Hello I confused in the attached shows that the beat for each measure is 2 beats ( quarter notes), however in the Tenor/bass staff, it is 4 beats, and one is slurred to the next staff. This is the songsheet of " Joy to the World". This resutls in uneven number of staff. Above is staff number 14 and below is no. 14 but longer staff for tennor staff. Any body can help me how can I sort it out.
I think this can only be done one staff at a time. It would be nicer to be able to do the entire score at one time, but I don't know if that's possible.
Thank you David, you are owesome, in fact once we change the default, it works louder for the rest and even for the new songs that we make. It helps me very much, I do not have to make it louder when I want to edit the screen recording and put it on my youtube channel.
I did not find the button for attaching the file, except if I start with the new email. Attached is the scores that I want to increase the tone by 2 sharp, my friend suggested. I though I can just plug 2 sharp.
Hello, I have filled out the note on the 4 staves. When we practice, my friend say can you change it to 2 #. I saidm let me try. But when I put the 2 # key to the neutral/no key, the pitch is higher but other voices sound weird.
