Long measure rests

Has any consideration been given to long measure rests?  That is, when one stave has a lengthy rest, it is common to see a heavy horizontal line of one-measure length with the number of measures' rest centered on it.

I remember seeing a workaround for 1.75 that included a hidden repeat of one measure (to maintain measure numbering) and a somewhat manual kludge of entries intended to approximate the real thing.

Is this still true for 2.0?

G'day Joel,
the work around is still required.

However, I'd like to suggest a better way...

Rather than using a hidden repeat (I used to do this, then I saw a work by Carl Fritsche) use as many 1 bar rests as it takes to have the correct delay.

Then mark all the rests and all but one barline as print | never.

Next, using the Boxmarks (Boxmark2) font, create a text entry for the multibar rest for printing.  Make sure you set it to preserve width on.

This way, when you look at a full score, everything lines up correctly and when you print the part, the multi bar rest does its thing.

Not only that: if you have bar numbering, this method takes care of the proper numbers!
That's what the forum is for, and that's why I keep coming back!

Hi Joel,
thought I'd post an example...  This is a snippet from something we do at church, there are several more staves missing as are tempo and dynamic marks etc.  This is not for playing, but for demoing the multi bar rest.

You need Boxmark2 at 22 pt as the User 1 font, staff size should be 25 pt.

To see the effect, preview as is, then hide the Vocal staff and preview again.

I did this example manually, but...

If you visit the Newsgroup, Kjeld Hansen has posted an NWC2 user tool for doing this job automatically.  You just put in the rest bars, don't worry about thinking about multi barring 'em, and when you're ready, run Kjelds user tool and voila.  Works "reel good ut do" :)

Lawrie and I do much the same, although I prefer a smaller size than 22.  I like to fiddle around until I get a more pleasing fit on the staff, by padding the multibar rest sign itself with spaces in its text entry, and by padding the hidden bars with preserved width blank text entries.  That way, items that are intended to be different look different.

Substitute this example for Lawrie's second one to see what I am trying to describe better than I can explain it. Use a staff size of 18 (File/Page Setup/Options), and change Userfont1 to Boxmark2, size 16.

You will see I've padded the rests within the text entry with leading and ending blank spaces, and outside the text entry, added text entries of blank spaces, set to preserved width.  Now there is a deliberate visual difference between m.b.r.'s of different lengths.
